Saint Joan

A production (and performance) I’d love to see.

As played by Anne-Marie Duff, the latest pinup girl of cerebral London theatergoers, Joan is a raw, guileless lass, without a clue about anything the men around her are doing. That’s usually the way of Joan, of course. But the superb, and ultimately very moving, Ms. Duff doesn’t pull the time-honored trick of flipping the internal switch that says “radiance” and making her voice go all trembly and poetic.

This Joan is an energetic, ordinary, irritating lass in all ways but one: her belief. We’ve had plenty of examples of late of how religious conviction can turn ordinary souls into fanatics. And history is filled with unexceptional people who were made exceptional by the fierceness of their confidence, the sense that they always knew they were doing the right thing for the right reason. Ms. Duff makes it clear just how irresistible such confidence can be.

Ah, the ol’ Saint Joan “trembly and poetic” trap. Sounds like a really interesting production – love the photos, too.

Dude, Anne-Marie Duff could bring depth to a character acting in a shampoo commercial. I adore her.

  2. red says:

Yeah, she’s terrific. I’m sorry I can’t teleport myself across the Atlantic to catch this one.

  3. red says:

Or, sticking with the Stockwell theme, I’m bummed I cannot quantum leap over there. :(

  4. Emily says:

    Hahaha.

Have you ever seen that show “Shameless”? She’s in the first couple of seasons. You can get the first season on DVD from Netflix if you haven’t (for when your Dean Stockwell list is exhausted). She was awesome in that. It’s a pretty funny show, too. There’s a lot of graphic and pointless boinking and stuff, but if you can deal with that, it’s great. I highly recommend it.

  5. red says:

Emily – No! I haven’t seen it! I will have to check it out, but Mr. Stockwell made 150,398 movies, as well as 5 full seasons of Quantum leap. I am BURIED right now – buried!!

But I just Googled “Shameless” and it looks like a lot of fun!

She wrenched my heart out of my damn chest in Magdalene Sisters.

  6. Emily says:

It is a ton of fun. Especially David Threlfall as the family patriarch. He’s an absolute hoot.

Yeah, the Magdalene Sisters is one of those movies that it takes about a month to scrape from your brain. So heartbreaking.

  7. Emily says:

Oh – and you’ve got to love Duff for landing a guy ten years younger than her. Especially one as hot as James MacAvoy (he’s in “Shameless” as well. Another incentive). On that show, she plays a character that’s like 19 or something when she’s in her early thirties and *totally* pulls it off.

  8. red says:

I just put it on my queue, Emily – thanks for the tip! Lots of squee factor??

In Magdalen Sisters – there was that Irish actress who plays Crispina. Eileen Walsh.

That is seriously some of the best acting i’ve ever seen in my life. Ever. Like – Vanessa Redgrave should be lookin’ over her shoulder at Walsh – it was that good. And her “resume” on IMDB is not all that extensive – amazing.

And her ending – that last shot of her – do you remember? She;s in the institution – and we get a glimpse of her thru the window, into her locked room – and what we see? anyway, it was one of the most hautning things I’ve ever seen in my life.

She’s not even the lead. But good Lord!

  9. red says:

    Yes! McAvoy!! Squeee!

  10. Emily says:

Keep an eye out for one of the characters who plays the main family’s neighbor. Kev. Blurpy. Beyond squee.

Eileen Walsh was incredible. She blew me away. That must have been such a tough role.

  11. red says:

    Blurpy??

    You said the magic word.

  12. Emily says:

Do an image search for “Dean Lennox Kelly” on Google when you get the chance. If you are the slightest bit disappointed, I will eat my own head.

  13. red says:

    It hurts.

    My heart literally HURTS.

  14. red says:

Although I was tempted to express disappointment so that I could witness my friend Emily eating her own head.

  15. Emily says:

Hahahaha. Did I hook you up with some hotness, or what? But yeah, if I did eat my own head, I would totally have to post the video on Youtube and Marc would probably re-enact it in Legos.

  16. red says:

Oh, he’s so hot that my main response to it is how unfair life can be.

  17. Emily says:

Unfair? When life gave us a man that beautiful? No. No unfairness there. Favor. Courtesy. Those are words striking fear in my heart right now.
