Quantum Leap: GEARING UP!!!

quantum73.jpg

I know I had said I would start my Quantum Leap re-caps this weekend – but turns out I’m going out of town this weekend, and can’t begin until next week. Tommy is ALSO going to be doing re-caps – so hopefully we can have a nice counterpoint thing going – I’m really excited about it – so if you’re a Quantum Leap fan, make sure you stop by Tommy’s! We’ll be going episode by episode.

Because we are geeks.

And we are proud.

Speaking of geeks: In lieu of the re-cap, I’m posting a bunch of quotes I had already compiled. All quotes come from the documentary A Kiss with History: Remembering Quantum Leap – which was a special feature included in my Season 1 set.

Donald Bellisario, of course, was the creator of the show. He wrote many of the episodes – found Scott and Dean for the parts – and basically shepherded the entire thing into existence. An amazing talent, that guy!

So to whet the Quantum Leap whistle, here we go! And don’t forget to stop by Tommy’s as well!

Loved every one of the quotes. Great stuff.

  2. Emily says:

Haven’t made it through the quotes yet, but I just have to talk about my favorite “Quantum Leap” episode ever. The one where Sam goes back to the fifties as a teen-aged rape victim who presses charges against her attacker. When the guy doesn’t get convicted, he and Al are all confused. They’re supposed to be there to set something right. How could the guy not get convicted? Then the jag-off shows up on her front porch one night and tries to do it again and Sam just kicks the his ass. “Ah, now I know why I’m here.”

That was seriously one of the most satisfying television viewing experiences I have ever had in my life. I still remember watching it on “Quantum Leap” night during college (yes, we had them. Complete with snacks and booze). The entire room full of us actually stood up and applauded.

  3. Emily says:

    “kicks the his ass.”

    Duh. Preview is your friend.

  4. Dan says:

    Awesome! At last!

  5. red says:

Emily – hahahaha yes, that is a very satisfying episode!! Because he’s in this girlie outfit, a modest skirt and sweater, and he’s going all Tae Kwan Do Master on the rapist’s ass. It’s awesome!

  6. red says:

Dan – I know!! I’m all ready – I’ve got my notes, my references, my screen grabs … now I just gotta write the damn things!

But guess where I’ll be tomorrow afternoon.

    Ahem

  7. Dan says:

Cool! I’m going to Saturday’s game too!

  8. red says:

You are? I’ll keep an eye out for you!

  9. Dan says:

Gimme a call if you want to meet for a beer before or after (schedule permitting of course).

Hopefully the rain will hold off!

  10. red says:

I’ll keep you posted – we probably will hit Boston around 1 or 2 … but I’m not sure yet! So psyched – dude, I haven’t been to Fenway in a shamefully long time. Can’t wait!!

  11. Dan says:

Well, you couldn’t have picked a better time to make your return. Fenway in fall: one of the best things New England has to offer.

  12. red says:

    Absolutely.

And if I’m not mistaken – Beckett on the mound, right?

  13. Dan says:

Indeed. Dice K tonight, Beckettt tomorrow, and Old Man Schilling Sunday. All of which is making it very hard to get any school work done.

  14. nightfly says:

As a true-blooded Met fan, I have to say that I hope the Sawx clean their pinstripey clocks. I’m sick of those frickin’ obnoxious fans, this whole “True Yankee” “House Some Old Guy Hit In” crap.

Love the quotes, too – especially Bakula sneaking off to play hockey at lunchtime! It’s further proof that he and John LeClair were separated at birth.

  15. southernbosox says:

I am soooo jealous! Drink a Sam Adams for me.

  16. Noonz says:

The quotes make me want to go order Season 1 and watch it. I never got into the show when it was on (I don’t think I’ve ever seen more than a few minutes of a given episode), but to hear the people involved speak lovingly of it this way makes me feel like I missed out completely. For the 22 bucks it costs, seems like a probable no-brainer.

And re the game tomorrow, I’m jealous. That’s all I can really say, because I am the baseball enemy of you and nightfly. I’ll be the one screaming at my TV when Torre stupidly and inevitably elects to pitch to Papi with first base open…

  17. red says:

    Noonz – HAHAHAHA

Look for me in the stands!! I’ll be there!!

And you should get Season 1 – and follow along with Ye Olde recaps! Maybe you won’t like the show – but maybe you will – it might be fun!

  18. Noonz says:

You’re talking to someone who actually (and willingly, happily) sits through the really BAD late-season reruns of Miami Vice. Methinks Quantum Leap’s going to sit well with me, based on the recommendations here.

  19. red says:

Noonz – nothin’ better than a little late-season Miami Vice.

And by ‘better’ I mean: horrifyingly fascinating!

Actually Quantum Leap is quite a good show – clever writing, 2 great leads – and an interesting premise. The show also has a really good heart – which can make it tiptoe on the edges of “issue” television, like afterschool specials or Lifetime TV – you know, let’s confront the big societal issues!!! … but it’s clever enough it doesn’t really make me get squicky. It’s not TOO didactic. You know?

  20. Noonz says:

I understand completely, and will even more so when my freshly-ordered Season 1 arrives (along with The Streets of San Francisco Season 1, Volume 2, which I ordered at the same time). Many hours of old TV will be watched!

  21. Noonz says:

For anyone else looking to order the QL seasons, they’re all heavily discounted on Amazon. S1 is 23 bucks, and S2 – S5 are 28 bucks each. (Just a quick public service announcement for everyone swept up in Sheila’s Stockwell Tsunami)

  22. red says:

I should totally get a commission!! Ha!

    This is gonna be fun!

  23. red says:

And yay for Streets of San Francisco – it’s been years since I saw that!!

  24. Noonz says:

SoSF is awesome! My wife & I are almost through Season 1, Volume 1. The thing about it is that the stories are the same as what you’d find on a modern, present-day procedural cop drama — there’s nothing hokey going on. The dynamic between Karl Malden and Michael Douglas is fantastic, too. It totally establishes the older/younger detective partners model that Law & Order used to such great effect for so many years. Plus, SF makes a great backdrop AND it has one of the best opening themes ever. Man, that’s some quality TV.

  25. Emily says:

I cannot wait for my first chance to use the word “squicky” in a sentence.

  26. red says:

    Emily – hahahahahahaha

    I love making up words.

It’s the feeling I get when I watch overly-earnest entertainment. Like Touched By an Angel or some such bull shit. It makes me a little bit sick. I want to rain on their parade SO HARD.

Like – do not make me feel squicky.

Have a nice message, sure … look at issues of right and wrong, please … but I BEG YOU: keep your sense of humor and keep at least SOME cynicism alive – otherwise I feel just SQUICKY.
