Random and Silly

1. I had a very busy day yesterday, involving a chat with two other awesome critics about an upcoming re-release of an old Abel Ferrara exploitation movie, Ms. 45 (Drafthouse Films is re-releasing, heads up!) (said chat will be published on Roger Ebert in a couple of weeks), and then some writing I had to do, exercise, doctor’s appointment, etc. But I did manage to squeeze in one episode of Supernatural. I’m at the beginning of Season 6 now. And I am still working on that piece about Jensen Ackles/Male beauty/Schtick which I referenced earlier … but the binge-watching continues. And the episode I watched last night was one of the sillier one-off episodes, which I almost prefer to the more Deep Dark Larger Arc stories they keep going throughout each season. This particular episode last night may very well be the silliest episode yet (although “Changing Channels” is, perhaps, the silliest episode of a supposed dramatic series that has ever been filmed, I thought it was brilliant, uproarious) and in the episode last night Dean was freaked out/alone/abandoned (what else is new) and ends up attacking a Little Person while berating him for being a “fairy”, which, of course, sounds really bad, and it is, but … he honestly believes said Little Person is a “fairy”, of the Tinkerbell variety with a streak of violence, an actual fairy that needs to be taken DOWN. Naturally Dean’s public attack doesn’t go over well with the crowd of horrified onlookers watching a big strapping hunk throw a small man in a suit to the ground screaming, “FAIRY”. Dean is then promptly jailed for committing a hate crime. Dean, in jail, protesting to the cop, “I don’t hate anybody of any size or any gay person …” But how could he elaborate, “I was calling him a ‘fairy’ because I thought that LITERALLY was what he was.” And there was one line, later, as Dean tried to explain to Sam another attack that had gone down (and Ackles plays the shit out of it, he looks absolutely insane and earnest): “It was a tiny … glowing … naked lady … with nipples …. and she hit me.” Sam’s response was a deadpan, “I’m not supposed to laugh, right?” As I said before, I take pleasure where I can get it, and I had so much fun with that stupid episode last night. I lay in bed later, lights out, Hope curled up around my head, literally snorting with residual laughter.

2. I have a giant crush on Judge Milian. I was stuck at my car service joint for a couple of hours the other day and The People’s Court was on, which I have not watched since Judge Wapner was in charge 5,000 years ago. I adore Judge Milian. Funny, brassy, gorgeous, with hope earrings, nails, and sometimes, cool tortoise-shell cat-eye glasses. She said to one sarcastic defendant: “Are you being a smartypants with me right now? Because I can’t tell.” I think she is fabulous and I think we should be friends.

I really am crazy about Jensen Ackles. I’m not (mostly) ashamed to admit that. This season hasn’t been quite as good, but I keep watching and will keep watching until it’s done.
If I had a friend Larry with super photo-shopping powers, I would want Ackles photo-shopped into my photo album. Hahaha!

      “(mostly)” hahahahaha

I’m so far behind the regular SPN fans, I’m trying to avoid spoilers although at a certain point the show does become a bit repetitive. I don’t care though for some reason – the chemistry between the two leads is so watchable. I’m right in the beginning of the season now where Sam has lost his soul – great work there from Padalecki, especially considering we had to sit through 5 episodes knowing something was “off” and not getting a payoff or an explanation. A bold move!

And yes, Ackles is something else. I am mainly impressed with both the subtlety and the total broad clownish-ness of his comedic chops – and I haven’t seen too many people write about that. It’s mostly about his angst and his abandonment issues and all that – which is part of the appeal of the character (along with, well, his obvious BABE-ness). But dude is super funny. I love it when he gets to let loose!!

  2. This is appropo of nothing except a wish for a happy holiday weekend and a thought that you might get a kick out of it:
