Review: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)

I thought the first installment was embarrassing and bad.

Good news, though: the second one is pretty great! Still too goddamn long, Jackson, Jesus Mary and Joseph, but the real work that needs to be done is done here and I loved it.

My review is now up at Roger Ebert.

  1. Just got back from seeing it. Agree with you on the too much Lord Of The Rings foreshadowing bloat. Let me just add that Legolas like totally for sure advanced 3 video game status levels by killing boatloads of orcs.

Bombur’s trip in the barrels got everyone in the theatre laughing – that was excellent. And Smaug was perfect. I wish the meeting with Beorn was closer in tone to the book – but that could be said about most of both the Hobbit movies so far. This was definitely an improvement over the first.

I totally loved it. The first one — meh. Actually, this sequel brought to life all the elements that made the book so compelling for me — Smaug, the mountain, the dwarves’ courage but also their stubbornness. Plus, the movie had the added bonus of eye-candy: Legolas, need we say more. Luke Evans was not so bad, either.

I also really liked the way the village was recreated — it reminded me of Venice, but also of Dickensian back alleys.
