I saw “The Outfit” last week on TCM. A lot to compare. Tim Carey is memorable as the robbed mob boss.
Nice review Sheila, this looks like my kind of movie. I’ve been a huge Michael Pitt fan for a while. He’s one of those actors that’s still somewhat under the radar but I feel should be a huge star by now.
I first noticed him in Bully (getting hot wax poured on him by Bijou Phillips), where he was a tremendous asset to an amazing movie, bringing a bit of much needed levity to one of the grimmest films I’ve seen.
I then saw him in Murder by Numbers, where I found his relationship with Ryan Gossling’s character to be fascinating. He was playing an intellectual (albeit a homicidal one) but his character was a million miles removed from the one he played in Bully. The guy has real range and talent. He’s starred in some really interesting and dark movies in The Dreamers (great movie for people who love movies), Funny Games, and Last Days.
He was the best thing by far on Boardwalk Empire before (spoiler) they jumped the shark by killing off his character, and I expected him to explode, but that hasn’t really happened. Maybe playing the lead in front of this cast will open more doors, because I feel like he’s one of those actors that can do anything.
Yes, Pitt’s really good. I wrote about Murder by Numbers a long time ago – love it (except for the last scene).
But Nina Arianda steals the show here. Especially when you compare it to her performance in Midnight in Paris. You’d never know it was the same actress. She’s off-the-charts.
Also, it’s always good to see Burt Young!
