Spectacular Spectacular

The Pioneer Woman has been posting some stunning photography of the dawn hours on her ranch. Here are some more. These are photos you can just fall into. Melt into. I’ve always preferred the dawn to, say, the dusk (and I prefer anything to midday) … so it’s a shame I’m not up often enough to revel in it. But when I do catch the dawn? I mean, come on. It’s enough to make you fall to your knees in gratitude.

It has a bit of a different feeling than a quiet pond and field on a ranch … but the dawn is the same. Love it.

These are gorgeous, Sheila. Wow. What is that tall, spired building in the pictures? And the one to the left of it, with the red neon — what does that say? I can’t make it out. “Something Tower”?

I’d love it if you’d orient me, because I’ve never been to NYC. I know nothing. Like, what body of water is that? The Hudson? See, I literally don’t know.

Is this the view from your place?? Breathtaking.

  2. tracey says:

If you tell me that’s the Empire State Building, I will slit my wrists because I do think I could at LEAST recognize that.

  3. red says:

Let’s see. The tallest building in the pic is the Empire State Building. And the red neon says “New Yorker”. That’s a hotel. I LOVE that sign. Isn’t it kind of beautiful? The hotel used to be owned by The Moonies. FYI. Resist that red glow. There once was a cult behind it. And yes – the body of water is the Hudson. I go under that when I go into the city.

You can’t really see the Chrysler Building in this light … that’s my favorite New York building. If you Google it, you’ll probalby recognize it right away! It’s there on the skyline – just draped in shadow!!

  4. red says:

Oh no!!!! Don’t slit your wrists!!!

  5. red says:

And actually – because the sun rises behind the city at dawn it is harder to identify buildings. In sunset, it’s almost like a spotlight is blaring directly onto the skyline!!

    TOTAL POST HIJACK…

I just saw Stalag 17 for the first time and have watched it 3 times in a week. I looked at your old post which also talks about ‘Ball of Fire’ which I ALSO just saw for the first time!

I am starting to become truly obsessed with Stalag 17. I can’t stop thinking about it.

William Holden William Holden William Holden William Holden!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. red says:

Bren – hahahahaha my favorite kind of hijack!! I’m so disappointed you couldn’t come with us to see Stalag 17 on the big screen at Lincoln Center! Isn’t it awesome??

And Ball of Fire. I mean, come on. Those seven dwarfs KILL ME.

    Doorbell rings at 1 a.m.
One of the professors says, “Oh. That must be my statistics on salt peter in San Salvador. I asked them to be delivered.”

    At 1 am??

The whole thing kills me. I want to talk more about it with you!

  8. brendan says:

How the hell does gary cooper pull that off? seriously, he’s this huge handsome guy and he seems like a blinking old fart. it’s hilarious. when he is asking her to marry him i was CRINGING at his naivete and innocence.

melody and i have actually been imitating barbara stanwyck’s dancing…she’s great but she cannot dance.

  9. red says:

I know. Gary Cooper as a stuttering English professor.

    “What does ‘boogie’ mean?”
    “Are you kiddin’, bub?”

    hahahahaha

I LOVE all of those professors so much. If you have the DVD handy, please watch the car crash in slow motion. The expressions of sheer terror on all of their faces is enough to make me WEEP with laughter.

And you are making me laugh about Stanwyck dancing. hee hee

How about the glimpse of the great Gene Krupa in action? He goes INSANE.

Also, how ’bout a shoutout to Dana Andrews as Joe Lilac – an actor I absolutely love. His performance during the wedding ceremony at the end, rolling his eyes, and gritting his teeth, is hilarious.

  10. red says:

And Stanwyck absolutely breaks my heart when she calls herself a tramp.

    God. She’s so good.

  11. red says:

And I think my favorite moment in the whole film is when that old guy says to himself, at the “bachelor party” … “14 watercolors …” in a sort of depressed tone.

    Do you remember that moment??

That totally prissy professor (I love him so much) is talking about his honeymoon where his delicate prim wife painted “14 watercolors” – and Gary Cooper who’s all hot to go, you know, have some SEX now that he’s married … is upset at the prim image of marriage from his colleague. And another guy, lost in thought, who hasn’t said a word the whole time, says, sadly, “14 watercolors …”

I don’t know … it makes me LAUGH.

  12. brendan says:

and dan duryea cracking wise all over the place…

melody was really mad at barbara for punching out the housekeeper. she couldn’t really get over that to be happy that she snagged gary cooper.

i think william holden might be the greatest actor who ever lived. this week that’s how i feel. when he begs schultz to tell him who the real rat is he is CRAZY.

and then the way his voice gets all hard when he is saying that the guys have added 2 and 2 to get four ‘well it ain’t FOUR.’

    awesome. awesome.

  13. red says:

bren – how about when he slaps the real traitor 3 times across the face????

    GOOSEBUMPS.

    Yup. He’s the best.

  14. brendan says:

Perfect. How he can be the strongest scariest guy in the room when he’s 100% AVERAGE.

I watched the ‘making of stalag 17’ featurette on the dvd and they said that they almost had charlton heston as sefton and the writers were totally glad when he couldn’t do it. not because they didn’t love heston but he’s just too BIG.

and robert strauss as ‘animal’??? are you kidding me? wearing the big dirty diaper-like union jack all the time? good lord. now i have to see all of holden’s films and all of wilder’s.

  15. brendan says:

But what I meant to say is that your photos of New York City at dusk are gorgeous.

  16. brendan says:

    I mean dawn.

  17. red says:

Holden was Wilder’s favorite actor. You can totally see why. He is closest to Wilder’s cynical persona.

    Sunset Boulevard!
    Sabrina
Then of course – Bridge on River Kwai
    what else.
Born Yesterday (where he plays a version of the kind of role Gary Cooper played in Ball of Fire – an intellectual partnered up with this brassy DAME – LOVE the movie)
    Picnic
    Wild Bunch
Network (which I know you’ve seen)

Oh, and go back and see his big break as Joe Bonaparte in Golden Boy.

I’m so excited to talk more about this wiht you!

  18. red says:

Bren – HA to your last comment! hahaha

I would consider this a VERY successful hijack!

  19. tracey says:

Oh, my God. I hate myself. How come it looks so much — skinnier? I think of the Empire State Building as a little fatter than that. I’m slinking away now … I think I spy a ponytail holder I could play with … do not EVEN address me … boo bye …

  20. red says:

Tracey – I truly think it looks different because it’s not reflecting anything yet. It’s just this big black column … so it does look different! Normally it’s all shimmery and glowy.

But boo bye if you need to …

    hahahaha

  21. brendan says:

    hey sheil, hijack # 2…

have you checked out ‘drunk history’ on funnyordie.com yet?

    DO IT.

  22. just1beth says:

When my kids were little, they always called it “The Vampire State Building”, no matter how many times we corrected them…….
