My group of friends in high school loved fondue – when we would go to New York on our yearly drama club trip, we always went to this fondue joint (is it still there??) before going to see whatever Broadway show was on the bill. We have continued our “fondue party” tradition – as a matter of fact, I think we had fondue at Beth’s last year, am I right?

But here is a photo of my friend Betsy and myself … and I hope to GOD it is a birthday party as well, because otherwise our hats make no sense … and I am trying to figure out our ages here. Sixteen?

I realize I am holding a regular old fork but I think I saw a fondue pot in one of the other photos.

It is so funny and interesting (and mortifying) to see the photos that other people have in their old photo albums. I know the ones I have by heart … but I honestly don’t believe I’ve ever seen this photo.

I also honestly don’t believe my cheeks could possibly get any redder without me having a stroke.

I love you, Betsy! I love all you wonderful women – and let’s get together for fondue real soon.

If memory serves me correctly, this was Mere’s birthday party. And I agree, a fondue party is long overdue. Just let me know when everyone can get together- I have two fondue pots, and a chocolate fountain. Bets- any chance you are coming to RI in the near future??

the place you used to go – was it la bonne soupe? that’s still around (on 55th street, i think), been there for decades, and i love it. i discovered it when my mom took me to see ‘biloxi blues’ and i had a horrible sore throat; she handed me new york magazine and told me to find a cheap place to eat before the show. i picked it because (a) it was french and (b) soup sounded good for a sore throat and (c)it was FRENCH. that was also the day we discovered sparkling cider from calvados – oh man! why don’t i go there more often?

Otherstevie – Nope, that’s not it – although I will keep it in mind! My friends come down to visit often and we looked for “our” place once (it was called La Fondue) and it has disappeared – perhaps it has reappeared under another name – but we could not find it. It was a hole in the wall – and SO MUCH FUN.

La Bonne Soupe – i will remember that!

I remember La Bonne Soupe from when I worked at 666 Fifth Ave in 1973. They used to make a fantastic peasant cabbage soup with a slight hot and sour taste to it that was just fantastic with baguettes. Loved going to that place. All their soups were good but that one especially was a real favorite of mine. I loved having lunch there and then going into Rizzoli’s and looking through all the good books they had in there and then going back to work. Hated my job but loved working in that area.

Also remember when the block where the 21 Club was was in such bad shape that a couple of cars had broken axles just driving down the street. They finally broke down and fixed the thing but that block was just one big pothole from one end of the block to the other.

I love the new category “friends” because I found this! I will be trying to come to RI the weekend of May 9 – there will be a big fundraiser at ECC on the 9th but I am going to try to be there for a few days. I will let you all know when I know. And then I will be there for all of July!
