Sadie Pulaski: an illustration

Here is my representation of Sadie and Stanislaus, brother and sister, having a heated argument about traditional gender roles in 1922 Poland.

Sheila, relax. Go outside and play. Seriously. You’re 12.

Does Stanislaus have a phantom limb? That’s hot.

This illustration looks like an outtake from Newsies.

  3. red says:

He does!!! hahaha – I hadn’t even noticed that – what the hell is going on there???

  4. brendan says:

um, i hate to say it, but this WAS going outside and playing for you.

  5. ted says:

These are such practically shoed, in fact clothed children – the pinafore w/ petticoat, the hat and breeches, those sensible shoes – what’s with that?!

  6. red says:

1922! Poland! Small urchin children! No time for play or frivolity!

  7. mere says:

What’s on the floor under the bed?

  8. red says:

If it’s her blanket, then I do not understand why Sadie would kick the covers off if it’s so dern freezing in Warsaw (and also there appears to be a pane of missing glass in the window).

  9. red says:

Bren – hahahaha so true. It’s still true.

  10. tracey says:

Why is there a floating eyeball on the right there watching them? A floating eyeball with a crown.

    What IS that??

  11. red says:

Tracey – hahahahahahahaha a floating eyeball with a crown!!!!! That is the hole in my notebook – but now all I can see is a floating eyeball with a crown. Is that the encroaching Fascist menace that is coming towards Poland? A foreshadowing of the Soviet domination that they will need to escape?

  12. tracey says:

It’s all very ominous. Maybe it’s the spirit of the high rates leering doom at them.

    Shiver.

  13. Dave E. says:

Ha! I saw that yesterday, Tracey, and thought it was Tom Petty’s left eye(he’s wearing shades). Tom Petty is living in Sheila’s scanner. I figured that was too crazy, even for me, to put in a comment.

  14. red says:

Oh my God, now all I can see is Tom Petty’s eyeball. It took me a second to see it – and now it is haunting me – that is hilarious!!!
