Review: Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2014)
Part II of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac. I loved Vol. I. Vol II is a bit more uneven, more conventional in many respects. I think a little Charlotte Gainsbourg (a very little) goes a long way, and Vol. II has … Continue reading

Review: Alien Abduction (2014)
I’m so tired of the “found footage” style that I was pleasantly surprised by Alien Abduction. It’s actually terrifying. My review of “Alien Abduction” is now up at Roger Ebert.
Review: The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden (2014)
A pretty fascinating piece of detective work, highlighting a murder-mystery from the early 1930s on the Galapagos Islands. Doesn’t entirely work, there’s too much information included, but it’s definitely worth checking out. My review of “The Galapagos Affair” is now … Continue reading
Seen Recently: Paradise Now (2005), Museum Hours (2012)
I recently reviewed director Hany Abu-Assad’s latest film, Omar for Roger Ebert. Omar was about a young Palestinian guy, who had a secret girlfriend, and a job, but also was drawn into the cycle of violence of the larger conflict, … Continue reading
Review: Rob the Mob (2014)
Last Ebert review for the week: Rob the Mob, which I really enjoyed. My review is now up at Ebert.
Review: Nymphomaniac, Vol. I (2014)
The movie people have already been talking about for a straight year. I went in curious. The experience of the film is so much fun, something I was not expecting at all. I knew it would be provocative, disturbing, possibly … Continue reading
Review: Maladies (2014)
Maladies was filmed in 2010, and is just coming out now, which is normally a pretty bad sign. Also a bad sign: look at that god-awful poster. It’s not really a good movie, but I have to say: David Strathairn … Continue reading
Review: A Birder’s Guide to Everything (2014)
Another movie about birding (and if you haven’t seen The Big Year, I highly recommend it!) This is a sweet and tender coming-of-age story. My review is now up at Roger Ebert.
“Royale With Cheese!”
Next up in the series I’ve been doing for Epicurious on food in film, is a piece on Pulp Fiction. There’s barely a scene without food in it. The monologue about blueberry pancakes always makes me hungry.
Review: The Single Moms Club (2014)
You know, it’s almost good. Almost. And Nia Long had one moment that made me cry. So there’s that. My review is now up at Roger Ebert.
