The Creed Trailer

Well. THAT was phenomenal.

Never mind the fact that it pours right into my Rocky obsession, but the film is directed by the enormously gifted Ryan Coogler who brought us the harrowing Fruitvale Station. I’m thrilled he’s at the helm. But as I mentioned in my post about the Magic Mike XXL trailer, creating a good trailer is an art in and of itself. It says little about the eventual movie – we’ll have to wait to see it in full to judge for ourselves. But a trailer can evoke, propel, create a need to SEE, generate excitement. The Creed trailer does that. SPOILER: When Stallone suddenly emerges … goosebumps. And I also love how the cuts coincide with the beats in the music. It’s elegant and smooth, but also pops off the screen. Electric. Can’t wait to see it.

This looks amazing! I’m also totally in the tank for the Rocky films, and it looks like there’s a lot here beyond just the connection to Rocky.

    Dan – totally!

Also – excited that Michael Jordan (so amazing in Fruitvale Station) is starring – that last shot of him running?? Goosebumps. And also Tessa Thompson – who isn’t really featured in the trailer at all – but I loved her so much in Dear White People.

and I agree: they hold off on showing Stallone (at least in the trailer), giving us a moment to invest in this young man, separate from his connection to the beloved Apollo Creed. The music in the trailer is incredible.

It looks thrilling – such a talented bunch of people!

great music — great cutting — great trailer, damn. My own personal thrill was less Stallone and more seeing Wallace and Avon Barksdale in the same shot again! I had to pause it and thump my laptop screen until my partner acknowledged the miracle! Michael B Jordan is so good, I agree, that shot of him running is electric.

Jordan has that impossible to pin down, impossible to teach “It”, he’s a movie star. I can’t quite explain it’s neatly but when I first saw the trailer it was almost an electric charge that leaped off the screen. You can’t take your eyes off him, and adding by some fantastic cutting and soundtrack this is the first trailer in a while that feels like it’s selling a story, an exciting story, instead of something they play while you wait in line for an amusement park ride.

The Magic Mike trailer, too, was a masterpiece of mood/music/edits. The kind of trailer I prefer.

I’m excited for the new Julia Roberts thriller – being a huge fan – but the trailer feels like it gives the whole damn story away. Damn it!
