Meadowland, directed by Reed Morano, and starring Luke Wilson and Olivia Wilde (with a supporting cast of Giovanni Ribisi, Elizabeth Moss, John Leguizamo, Juno Temple) was one of the standout features that I saw during this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. My original review of Meadowland on Rogerebert.com.
This week, I caught up with Reed Morano to chat about Meadowland. It is her first feature as a director and she also shot the film.
My interview with Reed Morano, director/cinematographer of Meadowland is now up at Rogerebert.com.
Meadowland opens in theatres today.
(Random coincidence: Matt Tauber, mentioned in the interview, produced Meadowland, and was responsible for the script making it into Morano’s hands. Years ago, I was in a production of Killer Joe in Ithaca, one of the most memorable and fun experiences of my life. That production was directed by … Matt Tauber. I had no idea he was involved in Meadowland until Morano said his name. We are Facebook friends but have not really been in touch for many many years. A decade, at least. So go, old colleague Matt Tauber!)
I enjoyed the interview, I liked her comments about giving the actors room to work and only giving direction if things were way wrong.
And congrats on doing more interviews.
Mutecypher – yeah, I loved her “give them a crack at it first” philosophy and also how she related it to her work as a DP. Anything I can learn about the job of a cinematographer is good news by me – I hadn’t thought of it that way.
A DP works in service to the director, of course – but they bring their own gifts to bear – their own ideas – and, like she said, the director relies on the DP for a “two heads better than one” thing. Which is, I’m sure, how SPN directors work with Serge L. An interesting situation there – since it’s rotating directors and one DP – different from feature films, etc.
I also loved the story of Olivia Wilde pushing to get that part and suggesting she audition for the role.
The movie is very good – although as you can imagine not a walk in the park.
