Review: Maya Dardel (2017): All Hail Lena Olin

I’m always happy to see her but even happier when she takes center stage as she does in Maya Dardel.

I reviewed Maya Dardel for Rogerebert.com.

  1. Weird. I was just looking at Rosanna Arquette’s IMDB page (for the purpose of putting some kind of piece together on her knack for playing–and embodying–destabilizing characters) and it seems she will have twelve (twelve!) movies coming out in the next year or so. I was wondering where to start and this seems like it! That, plus Lena Olin, makes it a must see in any case.

My favorite Olin quote was from years back (the nineties I think) when somebody called her the “thinking man’s beauty” and she said “Yes, I always wonder who he is, this thinking man.”

Yes! so happy she’s having a resurgence. More to come, hopefully. Rosanna Arquette’s career was stopped because of Harvey Weinstein’s bullshit. She was frozen out of the industry – as sooo many other talented women were when they either turned him down or told on him. If you loved her – as I did – and if you ever wondered, “Huh. I wonder what ever happened to her” – now we know. Harvey Weinstein happened to her.

so yes, it was so good to see her. It’s a great role for her. a real wild woman. with her dogs, her shotgun, her glass of vodka, talking with Lena Olin. What a treat!

and “the thinking man’s beauty”? Puh-LEEZE. Love her answer!

      • Yeah, I argued at length on my blog that, beyond the serious personal damage done to so many (including so many who were never famous), Weinstein also did enormous damage to the culture. The list of top drawer actresses whose careers just seemed to stop dead or take a curious left turn after they crossed him–Arquette, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan, Mira Sorvino, even Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie to some extent–is staggering when you think about what was lost. And that’s just the ones we know about–and just the ones who were fully or partially derailed by this one guy. I’d like to think this could be a catalyst for change, but I’ll remain a skeptic until I see it happen.

If “you can grab ’em by the you-know-what” wasn’t the tipping point … if we as a culture were fine enough with that to put him in the Oval Office … then going after HW seems a little too late.

and of course the only reason he’s toppled is because he is no longer at the top of the industry. so yeah, the whole thing stinks.

I’ve been hearing stories about HW for years. and just last night – a friend of mine told a story about working for a temp agency when she first got to New York – about 20 years ago – Miramax’s heyday – and other temps warned her against taking assignments in that office. Mainly because everyone was mean. But there was another undercurrent there – people sensed it.

anyway. It’s good to see Rosanna again.
