Some Yankee jackass said to me at the bar this evening, “After all this – the World Series will seem anticlimactic.”
And I slayed him with my penetrating gaze and snapped, “You can ONLY SAY THAT because you’re a YANKEES FAN!”
He accepted my scolding, and nodded. “Okay, okay.”
Some people have no sense.
I’m not even enjoying myself.
Look at me: I’m blogging about how much this all sucks on my way home from the bar.
Dammit.
Sheila: As much as I love your blog and your whimsy, you are going to have to get real about your passion for the Sox and living in New York. Yes, Dave Brooks’ column was superb, but consider this: Pedro Martinez’ actions the other day, following the benches-clearing incident, points up a rather serious moral dilemma that resonates throughout professional sports. I’m not talking about the throw-down of Yankee bench coach Don Zimmer, bad as that was. I refer, rather, to his taunting of the Yankee dugout and his intention to bean Yankee players, as indicated by his hand actions. That Martinez is still in baseball today, much less in a Red Sox uniform, is a disgrace. He ought to have been removed from the game and, by that evening, removed from professional baseball. But, alas, he is very popular with many people and he’s paid a lot of money, ergo he wasn’t even chastised very earnestly. He is a thug and a cretin. The fact that baseball tolerates proplr like that speaks volumes about the state of the game today.
Whew! Well, I feel better. Love you blog, as I said. So, too, does James Lileks. We work together. Very best wishes, Michael. P.S. This is a personal, not a public, message.
Hi …
Uh …
James Lileks likes my blog?
What?
Michael –
And about “getting real” – well. Thank you for the advice, but I am afraid that it is far too late for that. I have lost all contact with reality.
But baseball fans in general are fanatic nuts – who apologize for and justify the behavior of the crazy players on their team (if the player is a good player, I mean). I don’t think Boston fans are any different, or worse than other baseball fans.
If Roger Clemens had shoved someone to the ground, Yankee fans would have rallied around him. Because Roger Clemens is brilliant and they can’t do without him.
And how should I “get real” about living in New York? What do you mean? I … I just live here. That’s just … the truth of the matter. Please explain.
Thank you for posting a comment, by the way – glad you enjoy my whimsy. Give my warmest regards to Lileks – the man is a national treasure.
