I’ve been looking forward to Preston Miller’s new film God’s Land for some time. Jeremiah Kipp produced, and he and Miller wrote a series of fascinating production diary entries over at House Next Door, which I followed avidly. With my interest in cults and brainwashing, the story of God’s Land of a family who joins an end-of-days cult in Texas, sounds right up my alley. I finally got to meet Preston Miller and his lovely wife at the Oscar Night extravaganza held at Keith and Dan’s, and it was so cool to chat with them about the film, and hear about where they were at in the process. I am very much looking forward to seeing the whole thing.
A “first look” trailer has launched, and it has a haunting dreamy quality that bodes well for the film entire. Can’t wait.

As a Texan who writes about Texans in an era when a cult would have been, I think, unthinkable, I’m surprised to hear about this movie. This is the first I’ve heard of it.
What era is that?
It’s based on a true story, Shelley: http://tcsidewalks.blogspot.com/2009/03/texan-cult-of-week-gods-salvation.html
Garland = God’s Land.
Or, “inspired by” probably. It’s not a documentary.
Oh, hi, I wasn’t doubting what you said: I was fascinated by it.
Our mothers’ (or grandmothers’, depending on your age!) era.
No, I didn’t think you were doubting – just wondered about the “unthinkable” comment you made. Can you elaborate on what you meant by that? I was thinking you said that because of Waco, but I could be WAY off. I’d love to hear more.
I don’t know much about the Garland cult – any thoughts? I really can’t wait for this film!
