The BFI’s Ten Best Film Books of 2020

The British Film Institute has published their list of the Ten Best Film Books of 2020. A rich list, some I’ve read, some I haven’t, but now I have a list to base my next purchases off of.

Congratulations to everyone whose books made it to the list. My pal Glenn Kenny’s Made Men – on the making of Goodfellas – was one of my favorite reading experiences of the year.

Also congratulations to Christina Newland, whose She Found It at the Movies, at #3, is a collection of writing by women on “Sex, Desire, and Cinema”. I am proud to be included in that collection. I wrote on one of my favorite subjects: I wrote on the eerily prescient supernova-power of teenage-girl fandom. And how you ignore the screams of teenage girls at your peril. Because they predict EVERYTHING. They’re always there FIRST. You can order She Found It at the Movies here.

I honestly quite believe that cover exists, Sheila, although I am profoundly in awe of the person who designed it.
