I took these at dusk down on the pier in Long Beach. This is the Queen Mary, a huge ship owned by the University of California at Long Beach- there’s a big theatre inside it. My friend Alex – a professor at the University – was directing her students a show there and I went to see the dress rehearsal. It was so beautiful and strange down on that pier. These pictures look like I’ve tweaked them, like I’ve somehow altered the colors to make it look like this. But no. These are straight out of the camera. This is what I saw. I had a good camera back then, which could actually capture what I saw.
A blue and black world.

Our move to Paris when my father began working for the Marshall Plan was on the Queen Mary. We arrived in LeHavre on October 18, 1949. The beginning of the next part of my life. I was four.
wow, really?? that’s amazing. I wonder how long it’s been docked in Long Beach.
