Photo of the Day: seemingly the edge of the world

On one of my trips to Chicago after I left, I went down to the shores of Lake Michigan. It was March, and freezing cold. The little marina was completely frozen over, and there were chunks of ice heaving up and down on the water. I walked to the lake from where I used to live – my first apartment in Chicago, a block from the Lake Shore. The field of grass was yellow, the sky beyond was cloudy and grey. You couldn’t see the water at all, from that particular approach. It looked like an abyss.

Great photo. I knew immediately that it reminded me of something and a quick trip to my bookshelf (Thank God for physical media) confirmed it. Minus the house, this photo is the Criterion cover to Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven”. That was the Texas panhandle, but still…

Brad – it’s very Panhandle-y – or Andrew Wyeth-y – which is so funny since a gigantic body of water is right over there!

I hear you on physical media. Can’t do without it!!
