Not being from Rhode Island/New England I had to look it up. Is there some ‘tell’ as to whether ‘awesome’ or ‘crappy’ is meant? As in “the Boston Red Sox are wicked pissah” – how would I know which?

I really think it depends on the context. and if you were in the presence of Rhode Islanders and could see their body language, you would totally be able to tell which was which.

Think of ‘wicked’ as an all-purpose intensifier. For example, while Star Wars is cool, The Empire Strikes Back is wicked cool.

Did you guys ever say just plain old “wicked” to mean “awesome” or “great”? Like, “Have you heard the new Duran Duran song? It is so wicked.”
That phase was short-lived in Rhode Island, although “wicked” did remain, although now it is usually paired with something else.
No, wicked was always used with another word – usually cool, awesome, or retahded.

Not the same thing, but this reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend at work a few years ago. She’s from New Jersey and went home for the holidays. On a walk, she passed her old high school where some kids had spray-painted the word “Penis” on the sign … only not the first time. The first time they spray-painted “Penas.” Someone in the group must have realized that was incorrect, so they attempted to disguise the “a” as an “i.”
As she said, when she saw that, she new she was home in Jersey.
