Scala & Kolacny Brothers, the all-female choir from Belgium, suddenly became world-famous when their cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” was used in the memorable trailer for The Social Network. I have since bought as much of their stuff as I can get my hands on. They do odd covers of well-known songs, and turn familiar songs into eerie echoey anthems. For example: their cover of Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People” (above). This sounds like something from out of a nightmare and is rather brilliant. Manson’s is creepy enough, and I like the song a lot, but to hear a chorus of quiet calm girls almost whispering, “The weak ones are there to justify the strong…” is another thing entirely. And when they all suddenly get loud? I want to hide under the bed. Please don’t kill me Belgian girls, with your creepy whispers and your sudden volume.

Creepy is right. Very cool though.
