A beautiful post by my dear friend Alex – who was just inducted into the Gay and Lesbian Hall Of Fame. She describes the ceremony as only she can. My heart was full reading it.
Thinking of Mitchell working the room just makes me soooo happy. If I had been there, I suppose he would have forced me to go get some random person’s autograph or something …
And I’m in tears because of this paragraph:
I stared at Chrisanne, who had parked the car and made it in time to see me get my award. She was beaming. 29 years weve been together. 29 years of fights, make ups, lies, lost loves, ignorance, tolerance, secrets, bad jokes, food, and lots of hope and prayers. All of that, summed up in a bout 15 seconds. I took the award, and made it down the stairs. No tripping, and lucky for the audience, I didnt speak. I hadnt written anything down, and God help me if they ask me to improvise.
I sat in my seat with Chrisanne directly behind me. I could literally feel her smiling.
If you know Chrisanne, then you know that her smile is one of the warmest smiles on the planet.
And the image of Alex feeling Chrisanne’s smile – even though she wasn’t looking directly at her … I so get that. I so get the love there. It’s piercing.
Congratulations, Alex. (Or, as Mayor Daley calls you, “Ms. Alexandra”!)
Even from here, I can feel the love in that post. :)
Alex, “You’re the Diva, girl”. Congratulations!
It’s just such a beautiful thing. My heart is full.
Stevie – I know! I wish I had been there.
Chrisanne is such a fantastic human being. You would absolutely love her.
I’m sure I would. It’s funny – I don’t KNOW you and Alex and, by extension, Mitchell and Emily and Lisa and Beth and Chrisanne and Cachel and and and … but I have affection for you, my sweet blogfriends.
Stevie –
One of these days I should just host a “blog-reader” party. So egotistical, I know. But like … pick a bar in New York – rent the space for a night … put out the word … and see who the hell shows up.
it would be like this odd reunion – only we’ve never met yet!!!
i’d be there in a heartbeat! It was a really fun night with Alex…none of us knew that it was going to be sooo swanky and grown-up…of course i did wear Calvin Klein..just in case!
To paraphrase the peer pressure imposed on me not so very long ago, hands up who thinks Stevie needs a blog? ;-)
You know I’m there, Sheila, come hell or high water…or even the occasional Yankee fans.
Dave J –
My hand is up about the Stevie thing – you are so right!!! :)
Well thanks, Dave J and Sheila! What a great vote of confidence! My heart is fluttering right now. I’m not sure I’m emotionally brave enough to sustain a blog (although I’ve certainly left some revealing posts here, thanks to your thought- and emotion-provoking writing, Sheila).
Oh, and count me in for the blog party!!
stevie –
Yup – you’re a wonderful writer. And that’s final.
You made me SEE Bill Holden’s living room!!!
:)
Thank you (blush).
Stevie Needs a Blog!!! Stevie Needs a Blog!!!!!!
Sheila, plan the damn Blog Party. I’ll help you.
