Here is Alex’s re-cap of the Golden Globes.
I loved this:
Speaking of which, Queen Latifah looked terrific. For some reason though, with her in that couture ensemble, her hair slicked back, pulled, and 14 pieces attached, and 63 pounds of make up and concealer on her, its hard for her to still have Street Cred. When she opened the show, she told us all it was ..time to get down. No its not, Queen. Its really not that time at all.
And this – I could not agree with you more on this one, Alex:
I loved that Phillip Seymour Hoffman won his award, although my heart broke a little for David Strathairn. Hes one of those stellar actors who, for years, has been giving consistently great performances and rarely gets recognized. Hes a literal magician when it comes to his craft and he does it without flair or false bravado. Hes a quiet, gorgeous presence that always illuminates a role and always adds to the project. I hope this at least pushes him to the head of the line for an Oscar bid. At the very least, he deserves that for all the years of miraculous performances hes given us. He was also very gracious when he lost. That broke my heart a little more.
He is stellar.
And Alex shares her thoughts about Felicity Huffman’s win for Transamerica. Alex’s experience with that project was up-close and personal … Kind of heartbreaking, in that way that show-business can be … So all I could think about as Felicity Huffman was talking – was of Alex.
I’m with Lindsay, Alex. Your time will come.
didn’t see any of it. but will comment anyway. i’ve been defending queen latifah to my roommate, who HATES her in my special helen hunt way. but i’ve realized that i don’t really have the heart to. she bugs me. something smug about her. i applaud her success, i admire her drive, she must be great to work with because you never hear anyone say anything negative about her, but, YAWN.
now, as for david straithairn, here is a little anecdote. for some reason, my life has become intertwined with the state of maine. maria is from there which links cash there, i spent many years spending a lot of time there, it sort of became another state of mine. cousin tim and i created loads of rap music that alluded to old orchard beach, etc. maine has been big for me.
all maine folks DERIDE every single accent that has ever been offered in a movie as being a maine accent.
except for david straithairn in dolores claiborne. cash’s granddad, who doesn’t analyze movies per se, said, “that guy got it right.” maria’s mom shook her head in agreement, and amazement. “perfect.”
i asked tim about it. he said, “spot on, dude.”
of course, if you heard tim say it with his exaggerated maine accent, you’d have laughed as hard as i did.
Ohhhh bren – I love that story about the Maine-ards approving his accent. That means a lot!
He was terrific in that film as well. Love his career, love him.
What was the film he did that Chris Reeve directed? Gloaming? With Glenn Close and Patrick Sean leonard, or Sean Patrick Astin, or Camilla Parker-Bowles or whatever that actor’s name is … Straithairn was sooooooooooo good in that film as well.
In the Gloaming..i cant even think about it without crying..when he asks Glenn Close to tell him what his son liked…that is acting!
In the Gloaming. Yes. Beautiful heartbreaking work by him. Glenn Close, too, but especially him, I thought.
He’s so dignified that when his exterior facade cracks … it’s just that much more moving/.
have u seen Good Night and Good Luck??? Loved it..its less than two hours..full of great performances..including Rose Abdoo!!!…its terse, smart and beautifully photographed. A good story told well..thats all i ask.
mitchell – I thought it was a really fun movie. I loved Patricia Clarkson – I thought they all did a really good job – but particularly Straithairn – and yes!! Rose Abdoo!!!
i called her this morning to tell her that i voted for her cast for the SAG awards just becuase she was in it..i love her!
Hey Sheila – thank you so much for the play by play – pat and I were out to dinner and I was staring at the television, commenting..”Ooh, charlize!” “there’s Heath!” “What the hell is gwynnie wearing?” etc. Patrick was a bit put out by the whole thing – I wanted to be at home doing exactly what you were doing – taking in EVERYTHING and commenting on EVERYTHING. Thank you for the replay!
You and Alex have set new standards for Awards Snark. I applaud you both.
Reading the entertainment news today, I saw a picture of Kevin Bacon arriving with Kyra Sedgwick. It got me thinking.
