“It Feels So Right”. Recorded March 21, 1960, in Nashville.
I sang this at karaoke night while out on Block Island in the winter of 2010. I was stir-crazy in my little house, and so I got over my shyness and walked up the dark country road to the one joint open on the whole island, to hang out with PEOPLE. You could go an entire day without seeing a single soul out there. It was karaoke night. There were about 6 hardy people huddled in the bar. No one had any idea who I was. The island only has 700 year-round residents, so an unknown face makes a total stir (“How the hell did YOU get out here?”) but I had instant cache when I told them my sister was Jean, who had taught in the elementary school out there some years back. Everyone knew and loved Jean. They accepted me then. The bar was a dark drafty space, with a pool table, a dart board, and a giant circular bar. Everyone was wearing their winter coats and hats because it was still so cold in the bar. I said, before the song started, “How ’bout some Elvis” and a cheer went up. I couldn’t believe that “It Feels So Right” was even on the karaoke menu, but it was.
I highly recommend it for a good karaoke experience. That song goes over like a house a-fire. Even if you’re wearing a down coat, a winter hat and fingerless gloves, standing in a freezing fisherman’s bar being blasted by Atlantic winter winds. It doesn’t matter. The song plays.
