We met when we were teenagers. Actually, he knew OF me before I knew of him, and he saw me one day in a local mall and hid behind a potted plant outside Cherry Webb & Torraine to try to get a glimpse of me. This is not an exaggeration. I was buying cheap sunglasses at CWT, or whatever, hanging out with my high school friends, and he, already in college, dove behind a potted plant to stalk me. He would only tell me this years later. We would meet formally a year later when we were in the same classes in college. He would pretend he had no idea who I was at first. Once we became friends, there was no looking back. We became so tight that we actually were reprimanded in our personal reviews with the chairman of the department. “Listen, guys, we know you love each other, but you really need to calm down about it …” WE COULD NOT CALM DOWN and we still can’t. He is directing the reading of my script in Chicago in two weeks. He is one of my best friends, my forever man, my dear Mitchell. We used to call each other “space twins” because our friendship seemed so cosmic.
Conversation between us last year while I was in Chicago, out of nowhere:
Me: Our relationship is kind of …. mysterious and huge, isn’t it.
Mitchell: (replying immediately, with no forethought) Yes. It is the Easter Island of relationships.
Indeed.
Every photo below has a story behind it. Many of them portray underage drinking and one is clearly an underage hangover. Many portray us dancing. We loved to dance together. We would jitterbug entire cast parties away. We lived together in Chicago after college. He has put together the reading in Chicago with care and dedication, and we have not actually worked together in many many years. This is going to be very exciting.
xoxo Space Twin.

Love all of these! Happy birthday to Mitchell!!
Everyone should have a Mitchell in their lives! Mitchell, you have a gorgeous smile. Happy birthday from Ireland!
Lifelong friends are a blessing that just increases with age. Blessings to you both.
I have been following your site for quite a while, and I am always amazed by your way of thinking, it’s how I sometimes feel but I am unable to put it to words. I am really loving all that your writing about Elvis, even though I’m a Cary Grant girl myself.
I was shocked when you posted the pictures of you & space twin…I
Sorry, new computer. To continue, I was shocked when I saw the pics of you & space twin, in several of those photos, (especially the one of you and your friends, playing Uno with girl scout cookies on the round table.) You look just like Lisa Marie Presley..interesting.
Lydia – Oh, I’m a Cary Grant girl, too! :)
Never got the Lisa Marie thing before!
i dont understand. you have purposefully left me out of any of these pictures.
oh, and probably the funniest thing….maria’s fanny pack.
Luisa – you are definitely subliminal in the hungover picture of me and Mitchell. You took that picture. I believe that was the “this is my bear to cross” day.
and HAHAHA about the fanny pack!
Love this post.
