From Flowers to Fishes

A while back Roo (a costume designer and wonderful blogger) completed a flower hat – one of her assignments in the costume shop she works in. Check it out!

So for the past couple of months her next assignment has been to create a “fish hat”.

Her work is phenomenal. Check out the finished product.

I have a lot of respect for costume and set designers. They start from scratch…with a directive given to them and a picture that basically exists only in their heads…and produce things that are simply astonishing.

And the thing about it is that the audience takes it completely for granted. People expect great things from shows and movies, so innovative, clever costumes are underappreciated by most casual observers.

That hat is a work of art. Look at the eyes on the thing. It has personality. Wherever it’s being used, it’s going to add something intangible to the production.

How do you find these things, Sheila?

  2. red says:

Totally! The detail she got in that fish face – it is truly a work of art. Look at those eyeballs!!

And how do I find these people? I can’t remember how I found Roo … I think it was a post she did on Villette (by Charlotte Bronte) – but no, I don’t think so – I’m not sure how I found her. Like most people, I read bloggers who are similar to me, who have similar interests. I like people who write about creativity, their own passions, people who would never EVER use the word “artsy fartsy” for what they do – would never use it as a descriptive term, EVER. I like people who never use the term “artsy fartsy”, I suppose. heh heh

No, but seriously – Roo is a wonderful writer, and I love her stuff.

And I actually kinda wanna HAVE that flower hat. I mean, I know I would look ridiculous strolling down the street wearing it … but I still kinda want it!!

  4. Alex Nunez says:

That flower hat totally makes me think of a cartoon character named Daisy in a show (Oswald) my daughter watches.

  5. Marti says:

Whoa. I think I need a milliner like THAT. Impressive.

I saw this and thought of you. Title: “FEEDBACK FROM JAMES JOYCE’S SUBMISSION OF ULYSSES TO HIS CREATIVE-WRITING WORKSHOP” http://www.mcsweeneys.net/2006/5/9wayne.html

  6. red says:

alex – Yeah – to just have these huge PETALS coming out of your head!! So whimsical!

  7. Emily says:

Wow. What incredible work. Really, really creative stuff. I marvel at people who can come up with things like this and develop their talent to the point where the quality is spectacular.

…remember walking around Old Town is X-tina’s gorgeous hats and people were soooo hostile???… as if having the freedom to wear a gorgeous(not to mention expensive) hat was taken as an attack on the perception of complacency we (supposedly and erroneously) recognized in their lives!!! Hat wearers BEWARE! The people feel implicated by your choice of hat wear!

  9. mitchell says:

i love that flower hat by the way..soo cool…wonder what the production was???

  10. Ken says:

That was totally wicked! [/tricycle kid from The Incredibles]

    I also liked the title.

  11. red says:

mitchell – member Christina’s interpretation of that day later?

“That was on the day we wore hats and almost got killed.”

hahahahahahahahahaha really? We almost got KILLED??

  12. mitchell says:

hahaha..remember she was the one who said..”I wake up in the morning in order to hyperbolize”…hahahahah. brilliant and true!

  13. JFH says:

I keep trying to think of how Sheila would look in the flower hat, but I can’t shake the image of Mitchell in a string bikini (it doesn’t help that the only visual I have of Mitchell is him dressed as Andy Worhol)…

  14. mitchell says:

hahahaha…dont worry..ive never actually worn a string bikini..in fact as a new englander i feel tacky if im wearing anyhting other than old levi cut-offs to swim in…although i certainly have the legs for it!!! teehee..also i assure u that Sheila looks fetching in most hats!

  15. Nightfly says:

    Fish hats, fish hats
    Oogly googly fish hats

That’s the best I could do on such short notice, but really, that is a fantastic hat!

  16. red says:

Mitchell – I still have that hat Christina made for me – member when you brought it to a Pat show to give it to me?? I haven’t worn it in years – but I just LOVE it.

Red, thank you so much for your kind words– they really made my day (and to all of your commenters, too!)

I started reading your blog after visiting an awards site (Best of Blogs, maybe?) and linking to your deservedly lauded site from there. I’ve been a loyal reader ever since.

Part of the reason I enjoy your blog so much is that you tackle so much in your entries– your personal history, your reading, your heroes of film, art, and literature, your insights about theatre. I respect your writing, your thoughts, and your devotion to your craft.

I guess what I’m trying to say is: a good review is always nice, but it means even more coming from you. Thanks.
