I made the quote page.
Oh and also – my name will be on the cover, apparently (you can see it in that link above). Many people are just listed as “and others”. But there it is. I haven’t received my copy yet. I’m all wacked out. I’m going to LA this week, so I’ll miss my copy when it arrives. It’ll be in my mailbox when I return.
The Irish Letters issue of The Sewanee Review. Coming any moment now to a bookstore near you.
“Kinda” proud??? Oh, no, I think not, Sheila. Bursting should be more like it.
You go – I’m so proud (not kinda proud, but completely so) of you and incredibly happy FOR you.
GOOD.FOR.YOU!

BRAVO!!!!!!! Whoo-hoooooooo!!!!!
I think I hear the buttons popping from all the way down here on the Gulf Coast!
What a great accomplishment!
And TOTALLY OT – (and I know you posted on this before) – CBGB’s closing door after 33 years.
Reason I bring that up is cause JUST YESTERDAY an old friend stopped by with his girlfriend and she was telling of an impromptu trip they just recently took to New York, primarily to visit CBGB’s before it closed…she said it was a kind of pilgrimage for her. So it was really cool to see the pictures she took of the place.
Wow! Wow Whee!
Way to Go, Sheila! This is such excellent news!
I can’t wait to read the piece. And you’re quoted on the cover! And in such amazing company — William Trevor, for starters…ohmygod!
As they say in the Aran Islands: Mazel (OI!) Tov!
Safe travels to L.A.
It is a truly beautiful thing.
The crazy old coot hippie lite on the mountain says, “Righteous cool!”
Thank you everybody!! I’ve been out all day, just came back – to find all this love here … thank you!!
And Jon, I know – to be on the same page as William Trevor, I mean … can I please just linger in my pride for a moment, or is that a sin???
Sheil- member when I called you and left that CRAZY message on your answering machine, howling with laughter, when you sent me your Irish essays? I literally could not open my eyes, you made me laugh that hard. Just the image of all you little O’Malley children (especially Brendan and his freakish knowledge of baseball stats- I believe that is what made me lose control) and the way you captured ALL of it. Baby Siobhan and Jean/Graine. (I always secretly wished for a middle name that my father would INSIST on calling me. I pretended a little, actually… but no one ever caught on.) God, I love your writing!!!!! AND NOW THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL READ IT!!!
No sinning as far as I’m concerned. Hold your head up high, peacock, and shake those feathers. You are (thank you, Ms. Blume) “Otherwise Known as…” (rhymes, sort of, with pilaf at eight…)
And, besides, pride only goeth before the fall (“Departed” much, e.g. dirty little scene with Nicholson and priests at diner?)…
…but all I see and feel here is ascent, steep and true. So excited to read your piece.
ATSWIMTWOBIRDS!!!!
Beth – ha – yes, I remember you leaving this CRAZY message about me calling Brendan “austistic” – you could not even SPEAK and most of the message was dead silence, as you roared with silent hysterical laughter into my answering machine. so great!!
And you, my dear, are also the one who showed me that there was another level to what I wrote – one I hadn’t even intended. That the “two birds” were also me and my father. sniff, sniff. Hadn’t even THOUGHT of that. I loved your insight.
“The Sewanee Review, founded in 1892, is the oldest continuously published literary journal in the United States. It incorporates original fiction and poetry, as well as essays, reviews, and literary criticism. Authors and poets whose work has been published in the journal include Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O’Connor Robert Penn Warren, Dylan Thomas, Howard Nemerov, and Sheila O’Malley.” Not to brag on you or anything.
Hey, this is something to brag about! I’m sorry I’m late with my congratulations, as I’ve been incommunicado all day – this is great news. Let us know when to go to our local newstands and bookstores to DEMAND the latest O’Malley!
Sooo cool. Congrats Sheila, I can’t wait to see/read it. Jean will NEED to have that for her bookcase.
What a beautiful quote. Sheila – congrats – this is unbelievable to look at!
*coming out of lurker mode*
Woo Hoo!! Congrats!
Just a few days ago, I added Sewanee to the list of journals that I _have_ to get an online sub to. All the more reason now to get it!
