I’ve had my camera since March, I think. My street is a dead-end with a fantastic view of Manhattan. Every day it looks different. I never walk out my front door without glancing to my right, and seeing what mood the city is in. Light, clouds, fog, mist … never ever the same.
Here’s a montage of shots since I got my camera. Different times of day, different seasons. To me, it’s obvious the ones that are wintry – as opposed to summery … something about the light or something. I’m just obsessed with my view. When I move, I will MISS that view.

Great pics – and what a beautiful city!
Very dramatic skies in some of the pics (the last one, for example: love those clouds!). And the wintry vistas are so refreshing – especially now that I’m dealing with this humid and hot Buenos Aires climate (not my favorite time of year AT ALL!).
Ceci – ha!! yes, hot and humid is not my weather either! Yuk!! Hang in there.
Maybe you need to stand on a subway grate and let your dress blow up around you??
Have you ever gone to the Chart House? It’s the restaurant that juts out over the river (visible in Skyline8.jpg). It’s practically surrounded by the river. As such, the view is stunning. And the food is good too!
The NJ board of tourism needs to start paying me. I do good work for them. I mean, I abandoned the mother land, of course, but still, I do preach the good word.
Curly – hahahaha Your heart’s in Joisey!! No matter how far away you go. I have never been to the Chart House but I have heard great things. I mean, that location!! I wonder if I could just go there for a drink and take some pictures – or if it’s fancier than that. Do you have any idea??
I do believe there’s a bar in there so you could probably just go for a drink.
My memory is kind of spotty. The last time I was there, it was for a baby shower. The time before that was years ago when it was called Shanghai Reds. I think we took my parents there for an anniversary dinner. We were all appalled when my older sister ordered a Fuzzy Navel with her dinner. She had just turned 21 and was eager to flex her legal muscles. I’d like to say her taste in alcohol has improved but sadly, it hasn’t. She’s become quite fond of the malt liquor, you see.
Lovely shots. I especially like the one with the moon in it.
That concentration of buildings is overwhelming–like, how could we have built something so dense?
These are intensely beautiful, Sheila – thanks so much for sharing!
Sheila – *Great* shots, and what a fantastic spot you live in. And, of course, in most of them, there’s my old favorite: The New Yorker Hotel..beaming out to you across the river.
Have you seen this great close-up shot capturing it’s art deco glory?

Michael – gorgeous!!!
As you probably know, I used to live in Long Island City, just opposite the East River side of the skyline, and I used to look left every day, to see how it was doing.
Anne – hey you! I miss you, weirdly!! Loving your writing these days!
yes, I love that – I come out of my apartment, glance to my left – to see what “mood” Manhattan is in. Love it!
Thanks. Yeah, it’s just some odds and ends that may not turn into anything, but I thought I’d put them up. I wrote a children’s story which I’ve started sending out to places, so that’s the main writing project right now. I think you might like it, the main kid is a Red Sox fan.
I really did like living in Queens, rather than in Manhattan or deeper (hipper) Brooklyn, because I liked being near the water and hitting the skyline at the center. Some psychological thing leftover from growing up there, of being pleased I could go either way, uptown or down, having that equidistance.
“Maybe you need to stand on a subway grate and let your dress blow up around you??”
HAHAHA! It’s a good idea – but unfortunately, the air blowing up from the subway grates in Buenos Aires seems to come from the lava pools at the bottom of a volcano. So much for refreshing my poor legs, hahaha! So I’d rather not imitate Marilyn on this one – I choose a different scene from that same movie: when Marilyn’s character cools herself in Tom Ewell’s apartment (sitting on a sofa, legs up against the air conditioner): that’s what I do whenever I arrive at the office after my infernal summer commutes. I have an air conditioner right beside my desk – off go the shoes, up goes the skirt, and I take 5 minutes to cool myself off. ;)
