Cousin Mike O’Malley Welcomes Home the Sox

Cousin Mike hosted the Red Sox Welcome Home Bash last Friday at Boston’s House of Blues. His co-host was Kevin Millar, which, I mean, come on! Cowboy Up! I wasn’t able to attend, but there were lots of O’Malleys in the house (besides Mike, I mean. We are legion!), and it sounds like it was an awesome time.

Mike has emceed this event before, and it takes a ton of work and preparation. But it’s a wonderful and joyous community event. I look forward to the videos, once they emerge.

In honor of baseball season starting, on this freezing wintry day, here I am, age 10, in my back yard, holding our brand new kitten and wearing a Red Sox shirt. Those were pretty brutal days to be a Sox fan, but I kept the faith. It was a requirement, really, if you were an O’Malley. We were raised in the life. (One of my first memories, ever, is from Fenway Park. So it’s at that level.)

And here. Now. I’m ready to face the gale force winds of the day.

Whatever team you support, it doesn’t matter. It feels good to have the baseball back in rotation.

My Mariners fandom is so tied up with family things-being new to Seattle, and 10(!) months pregnant with my reluctant-to-arrive-son, sitting, listening to the 2001 glorious 116 win season on the radio, waiting, waiting, while my mom crocheted yards and yards of baby clothes…
We go to the games now at Safeco field sometimes, but I still love to listen on the radio.

I love listening on the radio too! The announcers are so much better!

Baseball on the radio is how I grew up. Sitting with my grandad on the porch, him with horrible iced coffee (motor oil consistency it needed the ice!) and me with a coke. Cubs on the radio. And stores about whatever happened since we saw each other last.

Nothing feels more natural than baseball on the radio.

Love this time of year. Nothing like being at the ballpark, 10$ beer in hand and watching the Giants(or whomever your team is) and feeling the energy of the crowd. It’s a special kind of energy that you don’t get anywhere else.

Yes! I didn’t go to any games this year – must rectify that this year. It’s one of my favorite things to do!

      10 dollar beer. Ha!
