The Delectable Jean Arthur

A montage.

I’ll always love Jean Arthur for Talk of the Town and Only Angels Have Wings – and I love her even more knowing that she had terrible stage fright and a lot of insecurities. Wonderful comedienne, I think.

She and Cary Grant SIZZLE in that late-night bar scene in Only Angels!!

Sheila! I will forever be in your debt for hyping Only Angels have Wings so much that I HAD to see it. My Cary Grant boxset arrived so I have finally seen it (and Holiday). I’ve pretty much watched it 3 times since I got it on Friday and I love it. Particularly the coffee scene – mostly because it looks like (to me anyway) Jean Arthur was really making Cary Grant laugh. I dunno it just seemed so genuine.

Oh, I’m so psyched that you saw it! And also that you’ve watched it 3 times. Isn’t it just sooo good? I love that coffee scene, too … I want to BE in that room. And he’s so cranky, it’s hysterical. But he is just so charmed by her.

I love the scene when he’s talking to Rita Hayworth in the office and he opens the door and Jean Arthur falls IN to the room, having been eavesdropping. She is so busted!

    Great movie!

In the coffee scene he’s like “What’s all this cooking?”. And it’s just a pot of coffee! Cranky indeed!

Also the part where he and Kid wrestle for the coin (such BOYS).

I loved it!! I think I should move on to something else in the box. The Awful Truth maybe.

“What’s all this cooking?” hahahahahaha Yeah, really – it’s just coffee, dude, chillax! And when he burns himself twice!

I love that wrestling scene, too. So many good scenes. Thomas Mitchell (Kid) is one of my favorite character actors.

The Awful Truth is hilarious. Enjoy!!!

Sorry to be late to the party (again), but I got to see Mr. Smith Goes to Washington on the big screen a couple of weeks ago. Jean Arthur frantically signaling “five…three” to Jimmy Stewart from the press gallery was the high point of a great performance, I thought.

Sheila: Jean Arthur–like Barbara Stanwyck and Rosaliind Russell–was the real deal. A working actress, great comedienne, and bombshell all in one. My favorites: Talk of the Town, The More the Merrier (she’s as great with McCrea as she is with Grant), and You Can’t Take it With You–of course.
