Eartha, Arthur, Marilyn, 1957

What a moment. It makes me cry because I know Marilyn was such a loving person, she isn’t just smiling, she’s delighted (that’s really post-racial, like we said before about “tolerance”) – and Eartha, brilliant performer that she was, understood perhaps better than non-performers do how miraculous was Marilyn’s talent. Arthur is watching Marilyn warily, a little ready to be judgmental about what she says or does . . . or am I just responding with my own story, like a Rorschach?

I love that observation. I see that too. The smile on Eartha’s face – gorgeous!
Arthur Miller, wary and distant, yes, I see what you see too – when I can drag my eyes away from those two goddesses.
Thank you for this! Never seen this before. Huge Marilyn fan -she was ahead of her times in so many ways including race issues.
Becca – yes, she was!
