Photo of the Day: Beach Sunrise

My friend Liz and I decided to go away for a “writer’s weekend.” Find some cozy B&B or something down on the Jersey shore, enjoy the scenery, unplug, and write. So that’s what we did. It was Halloween night when we set out. I had found an inn near the beach where I like to go to. We arrived, and the whole place was decked out for Halloween. The front porch was wide, filled with Adirondack chairs, and when we walked inside, we found no other humans. Just a bunch of leering pumpkins and a player piano! Our room was small, with slanted ceilings, and you had to duck your head down when you got into the shower, because the ceiling was so low. The inn was right across from the boardwalk. We had a great weekend. I got up one morning to go watch the sun rise on the beach. I hadn’t counted on the wind. It had to have been in the low 30s. I just remember being absolutely freezing, and also standing behind a column to hide from the wind, which made the cold worse. I had misjudged when the sun was coming up. When I got to the beach, it was still pitch black. Then, slowly, a tiny slash of pink somewhere out there in the black. A small slash of orange. It was INSANELY beautiful.

I took this. I wasn’t sure if it would come out or not, there was so little light available. But boy it came out. I enlarged it to poster size, got it framed, and it is on my wall to this day.
