I lived in this one-room place for 6 years – 6 very bad years, so bad I don’t remember much of it – except for the VIEW. I stepped outside my building, glanced left, and saw the Empire State Building, gleaming across the Hudson. I was addicted to the view.
I keep saying stuff like “I had a good camera then” but … it’s instantly obvious when a pic is taken on a phone and with an actual real camera. Particularly with the Zoom function.
One of my favorite things to do when I lived there was to wake up and go outside and watch the sunrise. It was always spectacular, since the sun would be rising behind the city – so you’d get these incredible colors. (Sunset brought its own pleasures). So that’s what you can see going on in the background, the swimming molten colors of sunrise, the black silhouettes of midtown in the background, with these dried-up dead wintry buds, hovering in the close foreground. This was January. Everything felt sharp and cold.
