Photo of the Day: Rule of thumb: Look up

When walking in New York City, it’s easy to keep your eyes forward, or down, as you charge through the crowded sidewalks. (Well … before the pandemic, when there were crowds). With the advent of iPods, people being zoned out in their own worlds reached another level. I myself float through crowds, listening to music, lost in the spaces of my own head. It’s all good. But there’s nothing like walking through the streets of New York City and deciding to look, really LOOK. You don’t even know what you’re going to find. You’re not looking for anything specific. But there’s so much there to be seen … incongruities, juxtapositions, humor, absurdities, humanity revealed. Looking up is a good rule of thumb. Not just to the tops of buildings, but every station in between. There’s all kinds of beautiful random things to be seen, like a wedding dress, floating in the air above the grime of 38th Street. My sister got her wedding dress on this street – maybe from this place? I’ll have to ask. If you’re in the garment district, looking up is a really good rule of thumb. The street-level windows are okay, but the REAL action happens on the upper floors … where you need to have an appointment just to visit. Like this place.

Love this picture. And, yes, those times when we slow down to look can be wonderful. I still remember, for example, the time I saw a man walking his llama on a leash down Fifth Avenue. Wish I’d had a camera.
