    “Toe pick.”

You can scoff all you want, but this movie is one of my guiltiest pleasures. I heart D.B. Sweeney in the worst way, and he’s just sex on skates here.

When she’s trying to seduce him while she’s drunk, and he has to physically push her away saying, “Not like this, not this way,” man that gets me every time.

And I keep waiting for some couple to actually DO the final move in competition, but I bet it’s outlawed, like Surya Bonaly’s backflips.

  2. red says:

    HUGE guilty pleasure!!

I have to have seen that film … 30 times? Just from random cable sightings. I always must watch it, and I ALWAYS feel better afterwards.

It’s like Blue Crush in that way.

DB Sweeney, despite his disturbing lack of a chin in profile, is indeed sexy sexy sexy, in that hot bad-boy ice-hockey way.

I kinda need to see that movie NOW. I’m feelin’ a hankerin’ …

  3. Alex Nunez says:

Blue Crush: good movie. Entertaining, stylish, beautifully photographed.

Oh yeah. And Kate Bosworth is fairly attractive.

re: D.B. Sweeney- his best movie, hands down, is No Man’s Land with Charlie Sheen. Sweeney is an undercover cop who has infiltrated a Porsche theft ring operated by Sheen. It’s one of my favorite Car Movies.

  4. Cullen says:

I seriously laughed my ass off when I saw ads for Blue Crush in the theater. I thought it was a joke.

  5. red says:

Why a joke? I don’t remember the ads.

I love it. I own it. It’s silly – like: she OBVIOUSLY doesn’t have the guts to be a big-time surfer – she’s not fearless enough … but still, it’s a really satisfying movie.

  6. I too rank The Cutting Edge as a guilty pleasure. It’s the perfect movie for a rainy Saturday afternoon or something. I wish TBS would stop showing Twins and The Beastmaster so much and get this movie into its weekend rotation. Such lofty goals I have, huh?

  7. red says:

I think running The Cutting Edge on a constant loop right now would be VERY appropriate because of the Olympics! Let’s get a petition together!!

  8. May I also tack on American Anthem in our Olympic-themed petition? It’s complete garbage but I don’t care. And it’s also topical since Janet Jones-Gretzky stars in it. Can I get a second?

  9. red says:

I feel shame. I have not seen it.

But I trust your judgment. Hear, hear!!

  10. Mitch Gaylord is in it. ‘Nuff said.

God, remember how HUGE the ’84 Olympic gymnastics team was?! Mary Lou Retton, Bart Connors, blah, blah, blah. They were everywhere.

  11. red says:

Totally everywhere!! It’s rare that I could actually remember a specific leotard that a gymnast wore, but – er … I could never forget Mary Lou Retton’s. It is burned into my brain forever.

  12. Lisa says:

I remember EXACTLY where I was when Mary Lou Retton won — sitting in my SIL’s parent’s den in Doraville, GA. It must have been on late at night, because I remember having to cheer quietly so’s not to wake anyone.

DB Sweeney’s best role is in Lonesome Dove. And the one he plays in my head.

  13. red says:

lisa – hahahahaha Love those movies that play in my head!!

And I was sitting in my parents living room, watching her win – I can so see it in my mind, how she started jumping up and down immediately, she KNEW she had won …

NOT as dramatic a moment as poor Kerri Strug being CARRIED OUT … oh my god, I still haven’t recovered emotionally from that!!!

  14. I was in Scotland when Mary Lou won the gold so I didn’t see it live. Also, the coverage in Britain was focused on Zola Bud tripping Mary Decker. Remember that?!?! Mary Decker’s squawking made Nancy Kerrigan look classy by comparison.

I don’t know what it was about the ’84 Summer Olympics but I remember them SO clearly. The other years sort of jumble together in my mind but ’84 stands out.

  15. red says:

Oh man, I so remember that Zola Bud footage as well!!!

  16. Didn’t she run around the track in her bare feet?

  17. red says:

    Yup!

And apparently she went to the hospital to see Mary and apologize – and Mary was a bitch to her and wouldn’t see her.

Once again, I am spreading gossip on my blog. I have no shame.

  18. Jen says:

Curly- maybe because the 84 Olympics were in America? Was the TV coverage of them as heavy as it is now?

  19. red says:

jen – I think for me it’s because the age I was at that the 84 Olympics came around. Perfect age to really pay attention, had my own schedule – I was a teenager – so I could watch TV when I wanted – rather than having my parents make the schedule – I think for me it was how old I was.

And definitely – Mary Lou Retton was an American heroine. I mean, you could not get away from her. I remember the Nadia Comeneci mania – the Eastern bloc girls dominating that sport – so Mary Lou seemed like a huge deal!!!

  20. You could really carve out a nice blog niche for yourself — gossip about washed-up Olympians! Here are a few items to get you started: I hear Brian Boitano is mean to his mother, Picabo Street doesn’t wash behind her ears and Bonnie Blair picks her nose.

    This is fun!

  21. That’s true, Jen. They were in L.A., right? The coverage here was really heavy. I was also about 10 or 11 so I was very much into idol worship at the time, I’m sure. I don’t remember being as invested in the ’88 Olympics or later ones though.

  22. tracey says:

Curly — “American Anthem” — I love that! Mitch Gaylord! Woo-hoo!

  23. red says:

I kind of looped back into Olympic interest in the 94 Winter Olympics – with Kerrigan, Harding, et al. Since then, I’ve been pretty much hooked!

  24. JFH says:

My brush with the 84 Olympics:

Was at “Nuke” school in the fall of ’84 and at one of the ubiquitous weekend parties. Bunch of people were talking about the recent Olympics and how well the US did on the “medal count”… Joining the conversation, I mentioned it’s not a fair comparison as the Soviet Union and its satellites weren’t there, so it was a lot easier to medal in sports like gymnastics and swimming. I was met with a stunned silence… Turns out that one of the conversation group, which I had horned in on, (the sister of one of my classmates) had just won two gold metals in swimming at the ’84 Olympics… As it turns out she wasn’t offended, which was good ‘cus I ended up being her brother’s roommate for a year at our first duty station.

  25. Jen says:

Yep, in LA. It’s weird how you get so INVOLVED in some Olympics and others it’s like, eh…

I was OBSESSED with Athens but did not watch even one second of the Salt Lake City Olympics. Although I must say I enjoy the Summer Olympics better.

There’s not much in the Winter Olympics that makes me cheer people on. I mean sure, you want the US to do well, but there isn’t one race or one particular sport where I’m screaming at the television.

  26. red says:

    JFH – hahahahaha Oops!!!

  27. JFH says:

Curly, how ’bout Bruce Jenner can’t skate!

  28. red says:

I love the summer Olympics, too – Oh, hell, I love both. I love the downhill skiers – they’re insane!! – and the speed skateres – and of course the figure skating. But the summer Olympics are thrilling.

  29. red says:

JFH – I loved how Scott Hamilton, as a commentator, referred to Bruce and Ty as “sentimental favorites” – hahahahahaha As though they have been a skating pair for 3 decades or something like that!!

  30. Alex Nunez says:

Sheila, Scott Hamilton is doing his best to transform himself into a gay, uniball, liliputian P.T. Barnum with this Skating With Celebrities gig.

Why is he yelling into the microphone at me?

God, stop already with the yelling. Do a backflip. Something. Anything but the incessant yelling.

  31. JFH says:

BTW, having Jillian Barberie on “Skating With Celebrities” is the same as having Stacy Keibler on “Dancing With the Stars”, both actually have significant experience in the respective fields that they’re competing in. I think this is unfair to the other celebs. I mean what’s next, Wayne Gretzky and Janet Jones in the next season of these respective shows?? (That last sentence was a shameless attempt to bring this comment thread to a full circle)

  32. Alex Nunez says:

JFH, sub nuke or surface nuke?

  33. Alex Nunez says:

    Full circle. Nicely done.

Wayne and Janet will be the stars of a new show: Jim Feist’s Celebrity Wager Showdown.

If the Jim Feist reference is too arcane I apologize. Google will tell you about Mr. Feist.

  34. red says:

I want Scott Hamilton to stop yelling at me.

  35. JFH says:

…and yes, I know, while Janet is a trained dancer and could easily best non-dancers; Wayne is used to hockey skates and hockey skating. But just look at what D.B. Sweeney’s character did in The Cutting Edge… “Hockey players: is there anything they can’t do!”

Many forget that although Janet’s big break was in The Flamigo Kid, she was a dancer in both Staying Alive and A Chorus Line… for Curly: Janet Jones was also in The Beastmaster, although you wouldn’t recognize her as she played one of the witches.

(Yes, another attempt to “full circle” the comment thread)

  36. red says:

JFH – you completely amaze me. That’s some really good information there. WELL DONE.

And I did know she was in The Chorus Line – I actually remember her in it – the leggy toothy blonde.

  37. JFH says:

    Sheila, full disclosure:

I only knew about A Chorus Line, American Anthem and The Flamingo Kid, before the gambling incident: but like a celebrity geek, looked up Janet Jones on imdb a few days ago and learned the other info.

Janet Jones in the The Flamingo Kid, best use of a white, non-bikini, swimsuit in movie ever. (Not sure that’s an Oscar category though)

  38. I had no idea she was in The Beastmaster. I tip my hat to you, JFH.

Actually, I’ve never even watched that movie. I’m just aware of it. Again, because TBS beats us over the head with it! Maybe Ted Turner has a thing for Marc Singer or something. Say, speaking of Marc Singer, anybody else remember V, the.best.mini-series.ever?!?!

Man, I’m the queen of 80s- and B-list-themed tangents today. Do forgive.

  39. red says:

Nothing to forgive. I live for that crap!!!

  40. JFH says:

Marc Singer also starred in If You Could See What I Hear (Don’t remember the real life guy who the movie is based, but DID see him again as a consultant to Ben Afleck in the “Making of Daredevil”)

Marc Singer’s sister is Lori Singer, the celloist (is that the right word) in Fame the TV show (she actually is a concert quality celloist).

Lori Singer was in Footloose with Kevin Bacon… what do I win???

  41. red says:

Actually, JFH – Lori Singer (who I never really was a fan of) has a small and almost mute part in the sprawling Short Cuts – and she is TERRIFIC. She plays a cellist, again – who basically is so depressed she can’t speak – and every day, after playing the cello for hours on end – she goes into her driveway and plays FURIOUS competitive basketball with a group of neighborhood guys. She’s tortured, gorgeous, and complex. I was like: Go, Lori!!!

Did you see it? Good movie!!

  42. beth says:

i love the conversations that The Cutting Edge reference has started today.

  43. red says:

    beth – hahahaha I know!!!

  44. Alex Nunez says:

Curly, who could forget V (both of the miniseries, as well as the spinoff weekly show)?

Michael Ironside as Ham Tyler (the show’s cheap Han Solo ripoff) RULED.

  45. Ham Tyler! And he had a like a Canadian accent or whatever so when he said words like “about” he didn’t sound all that tough or menacing. If I was a Visitor, I totally would have eaten him, weird vowel sounds and all.

God, I loved that mini-series and subsequent TV show. Methinks I see a DVD purchase in my future.
