Snapshots

By the dawn’s early light.

I used to live on the second floor – my window is the one with the fire escape outside it, behind the tree. I lived there from 2000 – 2001. Horrifying.

  1. Eric the...bald says:

Seeing it on the RCMH marquee makes even Go Diego Go seem cool.

  2. JFH says:

Who’s the girl in the yellow dress? It seems like I should know…

  3. red says:

JFH – it’s Lily Allen. Singer, MySpace sensation.

  4. red says:

Eric – hahahaha I know, right?

  5. JFH says:

Of course! Didn’t she cancel the rest of her tour of the US, in April?

  6. red says:

Yes! She said she missed her parents too much. Was way too homesick. I find that quite endearing.

  7. amelie / rae says:

I *love* all the reflections in the one with the wicked reflection. the hand over to the left… awesome.

really enjoying the contrast piece, too.

  8. Mark says:

    Singer, MySpace sensation.

This cracked me up for some reason. Like she puts that on her tax form or something. I guess it reminds me of that old denture cream commercial – “Martha Raye: comedienne, denture wearer.” – implying those were the two biggest accomplishments in her life.

  9. red says:

    Mark – hahahahahahahaha

    Martha Raye!!

  10. brendan says:

i like the sign in the background with the strangely spelled swear word. ‘marthar farkar!!!’

you are pretty handy with that camera, sheil!

i remember moving you into that apartment in 2000, i think??? no, probably not. i remember moving you from 103rd st. down to the 60’s on a day when every ounce of moisture that was in the sky was deposited right around our moving van.

  11. Alex says:

Oh my God….a Martha Raye anecdote.

    Genius.

  12. red says:

Bren – hahahahahaha It’s like a Mum swear in the background!

Yes – I think that was the last apartment I moved into where I didn’t hire movers. Blah. It was the worst apartment EVER.

  13. mere says:

I am really trying to find the sign that says Marthar farkar
Also- “I *love* all the reflections in the one with the wicked reflection. the hand over to the left… awesome.”

Why can’t I see any pictures with reflections??? does that mean I’m a ghost?
Help me- i’m losing my mind.

  14. red says:

mere – it took me a while to see it too. It’s not actually “marthar fackar” but it’s along those lines.

Okay, see the sign above Lily Allen’s head that says CAK SACK KAR …

    hmmmm, sound it out ….

Isn’t that hysterical? And stupid too?

  15. mere says:

ah. OK, I saw that one. Thanks for confusing me Brendon!

  16. mere says:

Damn! I spelled Brendan’s name wrong!

  17. red says:

    You’re upside down.

  18. mere says:

    I’m upside down.

  19. Kate P says:

Where is that, the one below the pineapple? It looks so ethereal.

  20. red says:

    Mere:

    hahahahaha

    “I know.”

  21. red says:

Kate – that’s in the concourse of Rockefeller Center. The ice skating rink is on the other side of that lit-up glass.

  22. Kate P says:

    Cool!

  23. amelie / rae says:

my reflections comment refers to the pineapplish pic.

  24. red says:

I also love how the “wicked” shows up in that reflection, too – I totally didn’t notice that at all. I just liked the pineapple at the time. :)

  25. amelie / rae says:

that’s what i meant by “the wicked reflection.” ^_-

  26. Sharon Ferguson says:

Sheila – this is TOTALLY off topic, but a friend of mine sent the link to this article and I immediately thought of you.

I have shut down my blog, btw – I am completely unable to keep up with any of it, largely because the writing muse has been kicking in for non-bloggy things, and well…life in general…I had to be honest with myself and say that I would probably do better as an audience than a performer.

  27. red says:

    Sharon – !!!!!!!!

And the comparison to Russell Crowe! I’m dying!!

That’s a great piece – it really is. And you know, I wondered what happened to you – haven’t seen you round these here parts for a while. Hope things are going really well for you!

I am so glad to see my dead boyfriend being honored on PBS.

  28. Nightfly says:

You know, I saw the “Go Diego” part and thought that it must read “Go Die Go.” It’s like, Hm, some marquee writer is feeling bitter this morning….

I am sofa king wee todd ed, you know?
