Wow! I never pictured that there would be such a scaffolding for the decorating of the tree, but of course a cherry picker wouldn’t be sufficient!
Must be a madhouse.
Stevie – I know!! And throngs of people just climb all over the scaffolds – doing god knows what with ropes, etc.
The tree lighting is on Nov. 28 – day after my birthday – and I am planning on being as far away from 30 Rock as humanly possible. Like, Nigeria far.
That is some serious tree decorating business–they don’t mess around in NYC, do they?
(I just got a mental picture of Sheila hanging out with Nigerian spammers. Tee hee.)

Living where I live, I find this absolutely thrilling. Tingly thrilling.
The picture of the ice skater looks like it’s from an entirely different roll of film. Like, here’s 23 ahots of the tree going up in Rockefeller Center… and one stray picture of warmups for the ice dancing in Nagano.
Kate – it is BONKERS once that tree goes up. My bible study group takes the train to the city every December to see the tree and the storefronts, and then go to Mass at St. Patrick’s. It is a rollicking madhouse, and well worth it all.
That’s what I thought, Nightfly–as much as I hate crowds, it’s worth it to see the spectacle.
Count me out of ALL of that. Yuk!
However, since I cannot escape – I will keep taking pictures of the damn thing going up because it is very interesting to watch, I think!
(Not to dis those who love such spectacles!!) I just have to walk thru it on a daily basis and it gets pretty old!
More photos to come, though. I’m excited to see the transformation of the tree.
Totally understand where you’re coming from. Crowds of tourists at Rock Center (or Times Square or …) makes me feel very unchristmasy. Love to see it since it can make you remember the excitement you felt about Christmas when you were four, but I have to be in a very zen-like state of mind or I want to hurt people after about 2 minutes…
My uncle was one of the guys who hung the lights on the tree. He’s since retired but I’ll never forget seeing his smiling face on the cover of the Daily News years ago. All the electricians stopped what they were doing and posed for the camera.
I’m with you, Sheila. I make it a point to see the tree at least once during the Christmas season but since I work directly across the street from Radio City Music Hall and have to dodge the massive crowds coming and going from the Christmas Spectacular which seems to have about 20 shows a day, I do my best to avoid the known busy locations as much as possible. I get all cranky and Scrooge-like in that massive crunch of people. It’s very unbecoming.
