Kicks (2016; d. Justin Tipping) Absolutely loved it. There have been so many excellent first-time directors making features this year. My review for Rogerebert.com. Kiss Me Deadly (1955; d. Robert Aldrich) I love this bizarre paranoid insanely phantasmagorical … film … Continue reading

August 2016 Viewing Diary

My viewing this month was mostly work-related, so the viewing diary is uncharacteristically short. A lot of these I watched multiple times, for research, etc. And I’ve been ill, too, this summer. I just had no concentration outside of the … Continue reading

Rust and Bone: One of the Best Films of 2012.

Not a review. I repeat: Not a review. I’ve been writing this, a paragraph at a time, for over 2 months. It’s more like one of my SPN re-caps, where I go scene by scene exploring story and character analysis. … Continue reading

Review: Bullhead (2011)

Jacky is huge. A hulk of a man. Back muscles and shoulder muscles ripple and bulge as he shadow-boxes ferociously in the bathroom with sickly underwater-sea-green light, a room that is his private domain. Sometimes he climbs into the tub, … Continue reading

Review: Dheepan (2016); d. Jacques Audiard

Let me take this moment to recommend Jacques Audiard’s 2012 film Rust and Bone, starring Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts. I keep meaning to write about that film. For me, it was one of the best movies of 2012. Audiard … Continue reading

The Drop (2014); directed by Michaël R. Roskam

The Drop, which opens this week, is James Gandolfini’s last film. He plays “cousin Marv,” a big Brooklyn guy who owned a bar called Cousin Marv’s Bar. The bar was Marv’s life’s work. Yes, it was a dive bar populated … Continue reading
