Metallica on the 29th floor

On the 29th floor. Big apartment building in the West 50s with a spectacular view. The room actually is on a corner – so you get two walls of windows converging.

Lights turned down dim. Teeny Christmas tree, with white lights on it, and sparkley red decorations.

The sparkling skyline of the city unfurling in the canyons outside the window.

Glasses of wine. Soft conversation.

And then:

Out of nowhere:

BLARING Metallica’s St. Anger and dancing like absolute MANIACS in front of the glass windows.

It was like a FEVER came over both of us and we just had to GET. IT. OUT.

We didn’t discuss it, or say, “Let’s play Metallica” – it didn’t go along with the mood of our night at all – which was quiet, contemplative. But then the CD popped on in the rotation – and that was IT.

We were thrashing lunatics in front of the plate glass, 29 floors up, for … oh … 20 minutes? We had no idea how long we were in that state – taken over by the music. Literally thrashing as though we were at a Metallica concert. We almost missed our movie because of it. We were like, in the middle of the thrashing: “What time is it?” “9:10.” “Oops. Let’s go.” We dropped the thrashing, instantly, put on our coats and left for the movie.

hahahaha Why does this crack me up?

Oh yeah – and snow slanted through the sky, too. Cutting down through the darkness, billowing by the windows 29 floors up.

Awesome.

I’m not a big Metallica fan, but there is something about watching snow fall from 30 stories up.

  2. red says:

David – I know! My apartment is on the 1st floor so I never get that perspective.

  3. Emily says:

I don’t know why, but after reading this post, the image of Sprockets from SNL spontaneously bursting into dance came to mind. “hello, my name is Dieter…”

  4. red says:

Dieter! hahahaha I kinda miss Dieter.

We did have a kind of spontaneous outburst – and then we dropped it JUST as quickly. “Okay – let’s go.”

  5. Emily says:

    “Zis dancing has become tiresome!”

  6. Lisa says:

You are beautiful and angular and if you were a gas, you’d be inert.

  7. Alex Nunez says:

Sheila, you lost me at “St. Anger.”

I love Metallica, but “St. Anger” is pretty weak. You could have lied and said “Creeping Death.” That would have been awesome.

Still, St. Anger is better than, say, Christopher Cross’ “Sailing”…;)

  8. Dave Rudbarg says:

Small world- watched the Metallica documentary a few weeks ago with a certain dancing Irish Jew we both know and love- and we both thought it ROCKED!!!!!

  9. red says:

Dave – hahahahaha She told me she had finally seen it. I LOVE that documentary.

  10. red says:

Alex – sadly, we did not have the black album at our disposal and we were in the mood to ROCK. So St. Anger had to do.

My favorite Metallica album is the concert they did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. AMAZING!!!

I like all of Metallica’s albums BUT St. Anger; just could not get into it… That said, of course even the weakest Metallica is just THE thing when you are in the mood to rock and thrash about. So relaxing afterwards, isn’t it??
My favorite Metallica album is Master of Puppets, by the way, but that album with the San Francisco Orchestra is so powerful and different! I love it, too.
