Then I suggested helpfully, “Make people laugh?”
He nodded. “Yes. I’d much rather make people laugh.”

“i’m not the type of guy who feels the need to intrigue people ….” Just blurted that one at me, out of the blue.

Uh-huh. Got it. You’d rather make people laugh. good to know what type of guy you are.

    Sounds like a lovely vacation!

  2. Ted says:

Oh my god – singing the Barnum soundtrack. I wish I was there. I think I might still be able to do that! There is a sucker, born every minute. Each time the second hands sweeps to the top, like dandelions up they pop, their ears so big, their eyes so wide and though I feed ’em bona fide baloney…
I won’t bore you with the rest of this stroll down memory lane. It’s probably not the same without the beach chairs.
    Have fun.

  3. southernbosox says:

If they ever do a remake of The Wonder Years, Cashel should definitely be the lead-

  4. Lisa says:

But are you watching the Brotherhood DVDs? New season starts in September!

  5. Alex Nunez says:

All this from a Blackberry? Damn. If it’s from a Pearl, then I extend a virtual “We’re not worthy!” Wayne’s World thing to you.

  6. just1beth says:

Sometimes I can’t believe that we actually SAW Barnum on Broadway with Jim Dale (and Glenn Close??). I mean….WHAT??? That was GREAT!! “The colors of my liiiiiiiiiife….”

  7. just1beth says:

Oh- And Jim Dale was the guy who “called” to remind me that my copy of Harry Potter was in- the one that I had reserved. I was like- “Jim! Member me? Barnum? Field trip with the drama girls from Kingston????” But it was just a recording. Bummer.

  8. Dave E. says:

Haha, love the Cashel quotes. Out of the mouths of babes…
Last week was family get-together time for me, and my 20 month old nephew has learned all sorts of phrases, everyone’s favorite being “ohhh nooo”. That was spoken in a tiny and sad little voice and mostly for no apparent reason.

Being the good uncle that I am, I taught him the word “beer”.

  9. Eric the...bald says:

So wonderful to have a family who “gets” you.

  10. Alex says:

I find Cashel most intriguing, even though he’s not the type of guy who NEEDS to intrigue people.

    Genius.

  11. Iain says:

Given the current performances of Manny, Papi and Drew, they might as well be on vacation with you guys…

  12. nightfly says:

Hooray for family vacations! And now I want to play Boggle, too.

  13. Val Prieto says:

Gracias for this post, Sheila. My yearly family vacation ended two weeks ago and I have just relived it.

Onlything missing from this post for me, was the sound of dominoes mixing on the table and the aroma of my uncle’s cigar.

  14. red says:

Ted: Excellent work from you with the barnum quote.

    we shall continue:

    a splendid edifice can climb
to build a tower up so high to a cloud
    you’ll anchor
using one tiny brick at a time
    bucks multiply til a bum’s a banker
just begin with a thin silver dime
that empty field it can yeild miles and miles of flowers
you don’t need no magic powers
    just a seed
    and showers
from the floor to the skies you can soar
if you’re wise enough to climb
    one brick at a time!

  15. red says:

Beth – I know … Barnum was awesome!!! We took time out of our busy teenage-girl schedule of roaming around New York City unchaperoned to see a Broadway show!

I thought we saw it with Tony Orlando … did I imagine that??? But I do remember Glenn Close being in it …

    “the colors of my life
    are softer than a breeze
    the silver-glow of eiderdown….”

  16. jackie says:

    She,
I can not tell you how jealous I am… I am trapped in the shenendoah valley with fat people and I am convinced that I have contracted a parasite from the petri dish that they call the resort pool…. help!

  17. just1beth says:

Jackie-HAAHAHAHAHAHHAA! As one who spends her vacations with extended family in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I SO SO SO get where you are coming from!! And Sheila, I have lesions on my brain. Maybe we did see it with Tony Orlando. I have it in my memory that it was Jim Dale. I think we need to have Betsy settle the score on Saturday. She WAS there, right?? It was the Jan group, right??

  18. Ted says:

Sheila & Jackie – Now of course I don’t know WHETHER you guys saw it w/ Tony Orlando but I was so, er, surprised to hear he did it that I went and looked it up and he had! So you COULD have. In fact he is quoted on the Brainy Quotes website as having said:

“The Barnum song I haven’t done in quite a while.”
    – Tony Orlando

Isn’t that what you would like to be remembered for saying? Seriously, he really did say that and it really is quoted.

  19. mere says:

I don’t remember seeing Tony Orlando. And I’m pretty sure I was there. Wasn’t I? We didn’t see this with Mrs McCimments? Am I mis-remembering?

  20. just1beth says:

Ummm….hazy,hazy…9th grade field trip… first one? Weekend in NYC? Others were “Nine” and “Cats”. Is that all?? And yes, you were there, Mere. So it MUST have been high school, not JG.

  21. nightfly says:

Huh? I was just seeing the egress; did I miss anything?

  22. red says:

Jackie – hahahahaha I miss you!!! Stay strong! I’ll see you on the 31st and I can’t wait!!

To all my Barnum friends: yes, Tony Orlando did it – and I do know that I saw him do it and he was great!! I think he took over for Jim Dale because Glenn Close was still doing the part when Orlando stepped in. I know it was him I saw because at one point during the tightrope part (God forgive me for remembering such things!!) – he used a wire to hold onto (if he needed it). So I’m pretty sure that Jim Dale would NOT have needed it – but honestly, I might have seen the show twice. Totally possible. I loved Tony Orlando for freakin’ learning that role and doing all it entailed – very tough stuff!!

    one brick at a time
    one single solitary brick
    one brick at a time
    one single solitary brick

    Exeunt.

  23. red says:

Okay – so high school buddies: didn’t we go to NYC four times with Cimments McBitchLips???

So what was the fourth show we saw? What did we see our senior year? Cats? Is there one year we didn’t go??

  24. mere says:

    sophisticated ladies

    (“I didn’t know this was a musical…”)

  25. mere says:

and I was with JG. we did go with her to Barnum. you are all right.
with Mrs McBitchCimmints we saw Sophisticated Ladies, Cats, Nine, and did we see Brighton beach memoirs? maybe? We did go every year.

  26. red says:

    Sophisticated Ladies!! Of course!

  27. mitchell says:

..speaking of Sophisticated Ladies…on Alex’s recent video Friday..see former S.L. star, the late and great Phyllis Hyman sing her face off!! Timing eh?

  28. red says:

hit me with a hot note and watch me burn
slap me down with rhythm from stem to stern
    my temper’s flared up
how can i keep my hair up
hit me with a hote note and watch me bounce!

  29. sarahk says:

    sounds like a great time!

  30. just1beth says:

No, no Brighton Beach. I know because that was at the height of Sheila’s Matthew Broderick frenzy (I believe she called him “Matt” back then). But I can’t come up with anything else. So, did we only go three times? I know Cats was Senior year.

  31. just1beth says:

No, we went every year. I know it. WHAT WAS THE FOURTH SHOW????????????????

  32. mere says:

i’m pretty sure we saw Sophisticated ladies 9th grade. and maybe Brighton Beach memoirs senior year. Cats and Nine were in the middle. I think we went to NY with Jan Grant and saw Barnum before Sophisticated ladies.

  33. mere says:

Was Cats senior year? Maybe I’m completely wrong. WHERE ARE MY PLAYBILLS?? Sheila! Diary archives! Fast!

  34. just1beth says:

Barnum was totally 8th grade, and it was a day trip on a bus. And we went to the Guggenheim.
Why do I not remember Brighton Beach? Did I not go? Did you guys go and I didn’t? Maybe I wasn’t allowed to go because my parents made me choose “Happening” or something?? Vague fuzziness happening? Totally need those journals of Sheila’s right now! Why does her job get in the way of my life!!

  35. red says:

Okay, I will have to dig out some journals. I know – I used to have all those playbills too!!

I know I saw Brighton Beach Memoirs on my own – and that was during the summer in between sophomore and junior year … maybe we went again that year??

And I remember Nine kind of not going over well with us – and Kate hated it. So I think that one was junior year – because (forgive me for remembering this) that was the last year that Kate came on the New York trip.

So now I’m confused – that means we would have had to see Brighton Beach and Nine in junior year – so that’s not right.

I am pretty sure Sophisticated Ladies was 9th grade.

    Sophisticated Ladies
    Brighton Beach Memoirs
    Nine
Cats (that was definitely senior year – because I have those pictures of J. in her “Cats” sweatshirt when we went and bought the Playgirl.)

The controversial years are 10th and 11th grade.

We need to figure this out!!

  36. just1beth says:

I definitely vote for “Cats” as senior year, because I have had lengthy discussions with my sister in law about that show and that time period. I also KNOW what I wore to that show, and believe that to be the year of J. and her leopard kind of coat. SO… that leaves, “Nine”, and “Sophisticated Ladies”. I know for a fact I NEVER saw Brighton Beach. And I also know Mrs. Monchichi INSISTED on musicals. Sooo… that leaves…….. what???????????

  37. just1beth says:

Could it be “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”? Or did I see that only at Theatre by the Sea?

  38. mere says:

we definitely did NOT see Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. I saw that at UNH starring Sheila’s cousin, though.

  39. red says:

Oh, that’s right, Mere! That was the night you became a glittering-eyed demon to me in your dorm room. Do you remember that?

No – we didn’t see Jospeh in New York – let me see if I kept ANY record of each trip …
